Habits: Gregarious (especially when not breeding) flocks numbers of up to 40 birds. Rather wary, runs in shot bursts, stopping to peck at food with short jabs of bill, digs for food in soft soil. Often vocal and active at night. Flight buoyant with deep wing beats, commutes in flocks between feeding areas. Birds with young or hatching eggs attack intruders by dive bombing with noisy screams, neighbouring pairs often join in such attacks.

Food: Insects and earthworms.
