Addo: Water Holes

Unread postby jad » Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:29 pm

What is the plan for the water holes in Addo Park, are the man made ones going to be got rid of? I see that Carols Rest was completely empty and a number of dissatisfied elephants were around it and you could see they were peed off about it. Marion Baree was also empty but a little way past going south there is a short pipe sticking out of the ground and elephants were trying to get water out of it, could this be a hazard for them. Further south at the fourways of Harveys Loop and Ngulube Loop and the main road to Matyholweni there was a water hole that the buffalo’s used to use and that has been filled in. Since I was there for only a day I was not able to go to see all the water holes, and I would be disappointed if Carols Rest is done away with, have spent many happy hours sitting there.

Since other people have also commented on the water holes on Facebook can Sanspark let us into what is happening or do we just wait and find out when the deed has been done

From my scant knowledge of Addo (main section), I don't remember any natural water sources.

AFAIR there is no river running through it or natural springs. I agree with jad.

Carol's Rest will become a dead loop without the waterhole there.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

Any news on the waterholes? We will be visiting Addo next week. We booked one of the safari tents overlooking the waterhole. Is there water in that one?

B B you will be able to look out over the water hole, it is some of the ones in the park that are empty. According to a report dated around 2008 it said something about the man made ones will not be supplied with ground water. Would be nice if someone would explain what is happening

I have just been to the Park and while there found most of the waterholes dry. However this may have resulted in many of the elephants going to Hapoor and the hole at the Main camp. We stayed in Rondawel no 2 and it was just magic being able to see elephants and a variety of other animals literally all day. Hapoor also provided exceptional views with large numbers of elephants coming and going around midday.

Must say that I found the park generally exceptionally clean, neat and tidy but Jacks Picnic Site still stood out. Have a brunch there and then proceed to Hapoor around noon and yiou will see an abundance of elephant, warthogs, buffalo and other animals.

Enjoy!

Apologies for the delay, folks. We've been experiencing serious water supply issues in Addo as of late.

The borehole in Marion Baree is drying up and a new borehle has been drilled which has proven to be a success. Water will be restored within the next couple of weeks to the Marion Baree and Spekboom water holes.

The Carols Rest solar pump has been problematic and this has been repaired. The Peasland pump is in for repairs and currently there is no water at this water point. Lastly, the Woodlands borehole is being repaired after the pipes in the borehole sprung a leak.

Thank you Fayroush for the feed back, it is good to hear that they are not closing the water holes.
