The snow hasn't come yet but the cold weather has set in....it was minus 6 degrees Celsius yesterday morning and minus 4 this morning! I hope those males' manes grow fast!

I cant wait to spend more time in the mountain cabins and hear the lions roar bouncing off the mountains. Gives me shivers just anticipating it. It seems they are heading to the area of the picnic sites and mountain cabins which I believed they would occupy. Plenty of Eland, Buffalo and Kudu and of course water.

Since the lions appear to be making regular kills have there been in increase in the sightings of vultures in the area.? And how are the lions coping with the cold although I suspect the temps would not be too different from the Karoo NP. Are they still in the area of the cabins and picnic sites?

Greetings All

The Lions have been busy moving around the Park. The Lioness has spent most of her time up on Rooiplaat again. At the moment she is in the thick bush along the Wilgerboom river close to the Umgeni 4x4. She has made a few kills. On one occasion she caugh a male mountain zebra on the main road close to the camp only to have it stolen by the males.

The boys are spending there time along the Wilgerboom river. Two weeks ago Sunday i heard/saw them roaring for the first time. Hahaha does not sound like there voices have broken yet. This past Sunday they chased the buffalo from the main camp all the way to the dam at the Doorn hoek guest house, was lucky enough to catch some of it on the camera traps. They are now close to the guest house eating something.

Vultures have not been seen over the park for the last eleven years. They are on our list as it was a confirmed sighting by a Ornithologist & Professor of Zoology. So i will not argue that one. Since i have been at MZNP the closest sightings that i have heard of have been towards Queenstown.

The lions seem to be doing well in the cold, it will be intresting to see what happens when we get some heavy snow.

Cheers

Thanks for the feed back. The vultures at Queenstown I presume would be Cape Vulture as it is too far south for any other species. Hopefully they will discover Mt Zebra on their wonderings or a possible release site for some rehab effort.
Have the lions taken any of the Dagga Boys yet?

Greetings All,

The Lions have been busy eating up a storm. We went to a couple of the kill sights in the park and found that the males had caught a Buffalo Massive Bull (Dagga Boy) just opposite the main camp gate, gemsbok bull, eland calf, two buffalo calves and a kudu bull. The males are moving between the camp and the second picnic site. They are currently at the second picnic site.

A new meaning to Armed Escort.

The lioness has also been busy, she has caught a hartebeest, gemsbok and aardvark. She has been spending her time up on Rooiplaat and along the wilgerboom river. The lioness is in the area of the Umgeni 4x4 trail.
