Yolande, Chat flycaycher would be out of range....This looks a lot like a Familiar Chat, and if it did a fair amount of wing flicking, and has a orange tail..(Unfortunately the pics dont show this)....Then Familiar Chat it is

This little chappie was under the shadecloth in Twee Rivieren. When he settled, he would 'flex' his wings once or twice.

Please help me ID this bird: I think it might be a Familiar Chat,
Seen at Suikerbosrand , in the picnic area. It is a weird little bird, it came all closer to me, and after I took it's photo and moved to the other side, here they were again, walking everywhere I went??

I'm confused (again!) :? . I saw this on Table Mountain and I was sure it was a Familiar Chat?

Image

Then I saw this one in Pilanesberg, which looks quite different (much pinker, paler edges to wing feathers), but on looking at Niall's website, it seems this is probably a Familiar Chat?

Thanks for help.

They both look like Familiar Chats to me :D , You must understand that some birds have various colour morphs and races etc etc.......One of your birds is from the South and the other way up in the North.....This could explain the variation in colour & age could also be a factor, although I doubt so in your case. Will look up more on the Familiar Chat, and try give better detail.

Thanks RJ. That is what I thought, but not being very 'familiar' with chats I wasn't sure. The Table Mountain bird is very brown, whereas the Pilanesberg one is more grey and salmon pink. Quite a variation. None of the pictures I can find shown such a pinkish breast which was what really had me confused!

Pleasure jacliz  You'll definately start realising more variations in the birding world, which will only better your knowledge and make identifications easier in the future. Birding wouldn't be the same without that confusion!!

Thanks for the help.
