So we moved on as well towards Mata-Mata and the much needed loo break and to buy a cold drink from the shop. Well, we hadn’t counted on the shop being closed for the whole day due to stocktaking! Are you flipping kidding me? You need a whole day to check the deliveries and fill up the shelves??? :slap: Oh well…

On our way we came across a rock kestrel – haven’t seen many of them yet, so there was a happy gal.

Further down the road the SO metioned that there was a PCG sitting right next to the road. Although I thought that the PCG would fly off once we stopped next to it, I asked Spots to slow the car down. And surprisingly enough, the goshawk didn’t go anywhere. :hmz: I was intrigued, particularly when I saw that there was a second one around :hmz:

We decided to watch them for a bit and see what they were up to. After about 10 minutes we were rewarded for our patience...

So, our patience was rewarded as a cape cobra came slithering from the direction where the goshawks were sitting on the ground.

The snake would move further on and we followed –

until it decided to cross the road and was headed directly for our car. As we don’t really appreciated snakes in or under our car :slap: we reversed to let it pass.

On the other side of the road the snake climbed a tree, the goshawks hot on its heels.

I was still wondering what was going on there. Surely, the goshawks didn’t plan to try to catch the cobra? :hmz: They must know that it would probably kill them? Anyway, the cobra went straight for an abandoned weaver nest:

Image

Image

And then everything went much too fast for us. All I registered was a squeaking of a striped mouse that the cobra had flushed out and some big commotion on the goshawk side as they rushed to pick up the mouse first. Successfully so, for one at least.

Image

Image

But it didn’t take long and the cobra served lunch for the other one as well. Another mouse had dropped to the ground and goshawk no. 2 dive-bombed onto it and started feeding. By the time the cobra had come back down again, goshawk no. 1 had also nicked the third mouse and the poor cobra was left hungry. :?

Image

It was moving backwards and forwards to find what it had flushed out but to no avail.

Despite not having had found the cheetahs, our day was made. That had been such an extraordinary sighting that Spots and I rated one of our three bestest. Seems some of the other people there enjoyed it big time as well since when we met them again over the next days, we were asked where we had left the cobra. It had also been a good learning experience regarding PCG behaviour. Who says hyenas are scavengers…

Back at the camp we found a very industrious slender mongoose. So industrious that this is the one and only shot I ever managed:

Image

The waterhole had another surprise for us – not the large herd of springboks, but the odd one standing out.

For tonight we had planned another braai with anne-marie and actually Eric, the other camp attendant at Uri. But Eric didn’t show up and so we ended up the three of us. Which was actually a good thing as we got to talk just between ourselves :D and also because this had built up

Image

and it was much more comfy to eat in the kitchen during the thunderstorm with three rather than with four people. Actually we just about managed to get the meat done before the rain started lashing down. But we couldn’t be bothered as we were having great company and enjoyable chatting.

28/03/2013 – Urikaruus

Our trip was fast nearing the end. Two more full days left – and still only one cheetah sighting up to then. :slap: And a far off on top of it. There was nothing, nada, niente at the waterhole that morning and so we eventually left towards the north again. It was definitely a raptor morning

And it was definitely a morning when the camera had to work overtime. Not long after the tawnies and the goshawk we bumped into bucky and family again who told us about a wild cat on Dalkeith loop. Off we went and indeed, it was still up in a tree like described to us. And she wasn’t alone (very sure on the ‘she’ part – got a distinctive proof photo  )

Image

She came down and fed, but alas with her back turned on us. By now there was quite some mayhem with all the cars and the cat obviously didn’t feel all too comfortable anymore.

Image

Image

As she went further into the dunes we left to find the lions sleeping on the dunes on the very same loop. And yep, they were there. A big daddy who got up shortly after we had arrived to seek shelter behind the dunes and 4 others, all doing what lions do best and very far off. So, no photos. Not worth it. But anne-marie has posted some. They were the very same.

Once again we went up all the way to Mata-Mata as it’s the only way to get a toilet break inbetween the long drives. On our way back we met bucky and family again who told us about two cheetahs close to the road on the dune road at 14th CHEETAH??? Let’s go! :rtm: Cruise control, 50 km/h and lots of prayers for the cheetahs to stay put. But we couldn’t find them at the spot where they should have been. We were searching high and low. Nada. :( Then one of the visitors who had enjoyed the cobra sighting with us approached us, greeted and just said: “They are still there.” Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! :k He knew exactly what we were after. We had just looked in the wrong place. There were two more cars around but they soon left and anne-marie approached from behind.

Once they had settled in a – for my lens – very inconvenient way, we left them to go back to the camp. Mother Nature was already calling again. :slap: We came back on our afternoon drive but the guys had vanished.

Yet a hamerkop and a jackal kept us entertained. 8)
