We visited Tankwa National Park for the first time last year and planning to again after our end of August 2013 trip to KTP.

I have not seen a thread relating to Tankwa and thought it would be a good idea to start one for all to contirbute and all to learn a little more about this amazing Park. Sorry if there is one already on the site, but I couldn't find anything.

Our trip was limited to 2 night at Elandberg Wilderness Camp - beautiful place !!!

I will add some images of our trip and hope others can add of the other camps etc.

Thanks Dotty.

I see there is quite a bit of info. on Tankwa so I will have to basically post images. Hopefully sharing them will give you a little more insight into the Park.

We were in Elandsberg Wilderness Camp for 2 night last year. A beautiful place:

One of the biggest problems with Elandberg are the Bees that come to drink at the pool. There are thousands of them and it makes swimming impossible. Although the following image looks great, I promise you cannot get into the water (thats if you scare of Bees like we are):

Image

Hundreds drown, so Tracy's early morning job was to ensure the pool is covered and the Bees cannot get to it (many do anyway):

From the wilderness camp there is a great walk to the top of Elandsberg.

I am sure you are aware that Tankwa Park was old farm land. Some of the ruins:

Morning Graham, thanks for the complement.

Went up in my Audi A4, roads were fine. I wouldn't try the Gannaga Pass in sedan though - a little tricky. I do know that after some winter storms the roads become very bad and sedans tend to get stuck in the mud - keep that in mind.

Just give the main reception a ring before going, they will advise whether road are diveable (that's if you don't have a 4x4).

Although I did try the Gannaga Pass, I only got halfway up before deciding to turn back. A 4x4 is certainly adviseable.

Hello Shane super photos . We will be there is 3 weeks time and just want to know in which entrance did you arrive and what entrance did you leave
We will arrive from Sutherland and hope to leave in the North and travel towards the cederberg .. Do you know that route at all and is it possible with a fairly high clearage nissen but not a 4x4

Morning Hugh, thanks.

We came in and left via the very south gate. The first gate off the R355 from Ceres. I think the route you come in from Sutherland is about 1km to the north west of the sout gate. You will join the same park road once in the park. All the entrances should be fine, except Gannaga Pass which is best done in a 4x4.

The road should be fine for your vehicle, but if worried call the park - +27 (0)27 341 1927.

Enjoy yourselves !

We had a glorious time there ... We approached from Sutherland . the land lady of the place we stayed at said we could take the shorter more beautiful road from Sutherland ... She said our car was fine... We tootled long for some way on and ordinary dusty road when suddenly we can to the Ouberg pass. Wow from a height we dropped into the Tankwa valley .. I looked at the views while Hugh held onto the steering wheel eyes on the road.. I would hate to come up the pass especially if it was wet. Arrived afely in Tankwa Reception was ever so pleasant and we spent two nights in the de Zyfer cottage. Sunsets and evenings were out of this world

By the way Shane we did the Gannaga pass.. no problems up and down Had a picnic at the top. Weather was perfect and we do not have a 4x4 .. no straining on the engine at all.
We least via the road to Calvinia .. when then turned left at the Junction th=o Ceres and then rt to the cederberg .. now that road was definitley nearing the 4x4 mark .. we travelled along opening and closing farm gates .. and meeting a farmer he said we were on the right road .. we were just about there when on the one pass Beeg sign no entry Flooding.. Darn we turned back and joined the road just before the Botterkloof pass which we drove over . then we went over the pakhuispass and onto the N7 .. really beautiful countryside .. Our car keeps telling us that when he grows big he wants to be a 4x4 !!!
Suzi-k You go and enjoy yourselves
Oh and we saw quite a lot of game . Eland Springbokkies Secretary birds Some birds of prey ( dont ask which as the sun was in our eyes) Jackal aplenty . and several other types of bokkies

Morning Hugh

Sounds fanatastic, feel like leaving now ! Plenty rain in Cape Town at the moment so I wouldn't want to be up there now.

Glad to hear the Gannaga Pass was easy to get up. Next time I will push on further. We will be there in the beginning of September and report back afterwards.

Glad you enjoyed yourselves and thanks for sharing you experience.
