In the area around Thihongoyeni we had many buffalo sightings. The reason probably being that they require water on a daily basis.
These two bulls were having a sparring session

The Buffalo is one of the "Big Five", a term originally used to describe the five most dangerous animals to hunt. And dangerous the buffalo definitely is - in Africa it is also known as "The Balck Death" or "widowmaker". Especially Dagga Boys - "dagga" referring either to mud or as a slang term for crazy.

These old bulls are constantly rolling in mud to rid themselves of parasites, aid in inevitable hair loss or to cool down.

Buffaloes mate and give birth only in the rainy season. Cows first calve at five years of age and the gestation period is eleven and a half months.

Newborn calves are hidden in dense vegetation for the first few weeks before joining the main herd where they are held in the centre for safety.

Every single Zebra has a unique striping pattern - no two individuals look alike.Image

There are many theories about zebra-stripes but they mainly serve a social function - individual zebras can apparently recognise each other by their striping patterns.

Zebras are highly dependant on water and are usually found within a 25 to 30 km radius of a water source.

They are pioneer grazers and prepares the way for more specialized grazers like Blue Wildebeest who depend on shorter and more nutritional grasses.

Mares give birth to a single foal every 12 months, peaking in the rainy season.

Shortly after birth a foal can stand, walk, run from danger and suckle.
