Young Lions playing at Gezantombi in the Kruger Park (video)

Unread postby pietert » Thu May 02, 2013 11:14 am

This must be one of the prides most watched by visitors to the Park. I found them several times at or near Gezantombi. Enjoy.

In my office I have a copy of the Kruger map by Andy and Lorrain Tinker. I could only find "Gasanftombi" in it (approx 4km North of Croc Bridge). Is it the same place as "Gezantombi" ??? :hmz:

Re: Territories

Unread postby jasond » Thu Jun 06, 2013 10:36 pm

this is a interesting topic and hope others will tell what they know of the territories, i know mostly about a few coalitions of male lions. Most of these coalitions are called different names by different rangers or lodges so it can be confusing. this is a start and will try to add more later

southern kruger/Skukuza area

3 male lions called the Toulon males or Sand River males
around 9-10 years old
territory is around Maroela Loop S83, H4-1 AND H1-2 NE of Skukuza

3 male lions called the Hildas Rock males or Sand River males or Skukuza males
around 4-5 years old
territory is around Tinga, H11 which is NW of Skukuza

3 male lions called the Sand River males
around 6-8 years old
territory is in Rhino Walking safaris concession

3 male lions called the Plains Camp males
around 5-6 years old
territory is around Plains Camp area of Rhino Walking safaris concession

2 male lions called the younger Robson males or Stompie and 1 Eye/SOE
around 10 years old, 1 Eye was last seen 1 month ago in very bad condition after a fight with another male lion so not sure if he survived.
territory is usually on the H1-2 NE of Skukuza around Mantimahle Dam but they seem to have moved territory slightly south of the dam

We are almost on our way to South africa and kruger. Only 28 sleeps.

The thing I miss most is the sound of lions. I  we will hear them this year. I wish we will see lots of lions this time. Nothing like the rush you get when you spot a lion yourself.

In February 2010 my son and I drove out of the Pretoriuskop gate first one morning, and saw these 2 lions in the road. We spend almost 1,5 hour with them and saw them mating several times. A great experience and it raised a lot of questions from my 10 year old son
