One of the most special birds in the birding world.

This Hawk's diet consists out of Bats which it hawks at dusk and dawn.

Maybe it is because sightings, like posts on the thread are rare.

Later I will post a pic of this bird, one I had mentally written off as not getting to see.

But quite fortuitously while looking for wood owls, we saw one.

There is a resident pair of Bat Hawks at Mopani. We saw them both nights we stayed at Mopani while having dinner on the restaurant's deck at dusk, both nights they were still out when it was dark and they used the lights from the restaurant to chase the bats. At first we were not sure, but then the nice couple sitting next to us told us what the bird with the pointy wings were. They came quit close at times, but we could not tell if they caught anything.

BTW, the restaurant is under new management (not part of the restaurant chain in the other main camps) and we had the best lunches and dinners there. It could have been served somewhere in Sandton and the prices nothing more than what we pay in Pretoria. Even the drinks were fancy in nice glasses with cherries and mint leaves. So go watch the Bat Hawks and have a great meal a the same time!

We were lucky enough to see a bat hawk with kill on top of the berg-en-dal restaurant, we were having a meal outside..the only mad ones to brave the cold in August...heard a commotion above and saw the hawk pinning and eating the bat as we tucked into our fish and chips...I nearly asked the hawk if it minded swopping

john
