Juanita

I'm not sure where you are from but have you thought about hiring a fridge? We did that last year for our trip to KTP and it worked out well. If you are from JHB I can give you the contact details for the place we hired an Engel fridge/freezer from-just send me a PM!

Supermarket

Unread postby Francesco » Mon Jul 23, 2012 5:55 pm

Hi

I will drive from Mariental Gochas to Mata Mata. Could you please suggest a supermarket en route where we could do our shopping before entering the KTP?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Francesco

Hi Francesco, I think Mariental will be the best for shopping.

Actually, Marienthal is possibly your only option, if you need a large supermarket. I would definitely shop there, and not take chances.
Don't forget to fill up the tank(s), it seems petrol is cheaper in Namibia. And is good practice anyway, you are never sure if you can tank. ;)

Hi Francesco,

There is a small OK shop in Stampriet where we got most of the foodstuff required for a short trip to KTP. The Spar in Marienthal is much better, but because its slightly off the route to Mata-Mata and we only stayed for another 4 days in the park we opted for Stampriet to get a few stuff. They bake their own bread and there was enough fresh vegies.

Our last fuel stop was Kalkrand and we overnight at a lodge near Gochas. Our trip started at 8 am SA time from Okaukuejo and we reached Gochas around 5 pm (a bit late to be on time at 4: 30 pm SA time) at the border.

Don't be fooled by the distances the trip from Stampriet to Mata-Mata can take about 3 hours, specially if you towing a heavy off-road caravan. We travelled at 70 -80 km/h, but maybe if you feel comfortable drivng a gravel road you can try around 90 km/h.

The other point I want to mention is that we had a nice meal at the restaurant in Twee Rivieren and you can get a few goods there as well like cooldrinks, bread, wood, pies and beer / wine. Freshly baked bread on order is available at Mata-Mata as well. The wood is expensive, but if you care about your enviroment it make sense to pay R35 per bundle. Even in winter we only use wood to braai and if its pasta / potjie night no fire.

Sorry for the long story, but you must understand I've just returned and miss the place already.

What you missed... 26 Feb 2013 - Mata Mata

To the 8 or 9 cars that rushed past us, look a bit closer next time, we weren't just photographing another sunset. At 19h12 this male lion walked along the dune rim for about 8 minutes in the dunes between the riverbed and the camp .

Early that same morning there were 2 cheetah not far from this position and again at least 4 cars rushed past, the cheetah went on to make a wildebeest calf kill 10 minutes later.

Rushing away from Mata-Mata seems to be a habit with many.
Heard more stories like that before.

Graham,

Great shots of the lion on the dune. A pity some missed it while driving west with the setting sun in their eyes. Maybe they were trying to get to camp before sunset. Was this shot taken at the turnoff to the tented camp or closer to Mata-Mata.

I hope you got lots of fab shots of the wildebeest kill. Usually one see them hunting for springbok, but wildebeest is quite large and not often recorded.

A year or what ago the was lots of debate if its possible for cheetah to pull down a wildebeest, and it just proof how often we learn something new from nature.

I would have been one of those cars driving past. I always had good results with this policy.
