Choice assistance between MZNP and Mokala NP please

Unread postby Leaping Lizards » Tue Feb 26, 2013 11:27 am

Hi there All

We have decided to do a 10 hour trek for 4 or 5 days of big blue skies, the open bush and maybe a few sightings.

We cannot seem to decide between Mountain Zebra NP or Mokala. We have never been to either.

Which would you advise and why?
Would you advise a 4x4 for them to cover more ground?
We know that at Mokala we have a good chance of seeing Roan and at MZNP we have a good chance of seeing Aardwolf, so they cancel each other out, but which park would afford a better chance of seeing unmentionables from Tourist Roads?
We have seen none of the above in the wild.

We are looking at the 3rd week in March or so. Both still have lots of accommodation for that time. (Before Easter Rush)

Thanks in advance

Hi Leopards. We have been to both parks a few times and it is very difficult having to choose between the two because both offer very good wildlife experiences.
Trying to be objective, I would say that your chances of seeing Aardwolf or Brown Hyena in any of the two parks are rather small. Well actually your chances of seeing one of them during daytime are small in any of the camps, since they operate mainly at night. Your chances of seeing roan in Mokala is actually quite good, since they have quite a large number there.
My advice to you is to visit them both, if at all possible. You will not be sorry.

Enjoy

Mokala

Nice park, lots of tortoise, kudu's, Rooihartbeeste, Eland, Rhino, Buffolo,

Small camping place, 5 star.

Mountain Zebra - stunning views, nice mountains, not so much wild animals. Can be windy and cold - even in March.

But my choice - Mokala

Hi Leaping Lizards,

I've only been to MZNP before, but this year I am trying out Mokala. I will be at Mokala from 21 - 26 March, starting off with a few days at Lilidale and then Motswedi campsite. After my visit I will be able tell, but you need advice for the same time I will be there. The best is then to join me as a newbie to the park and I can then tell you if Mokala was the better choice.

My first visit to MZNP was in 1989 when I did the 3 day hiking trail. During those days no buffalo or cheetah but I had one of my best sighting walking into a Rooikat (Caracal). My last trip was just a stop over in 2011 on the way to Addo. Besides aardwolf you also have a great chance of seeing aardvark. My sighting resulted in a thorn through my tyre, which we drove with until Howick, but after another flat decided to buy two new tyres. Real expensive sighting but glad we saw it.

Leaping Lizards, I have only been to Mount Zebra, so Mokala is still on my wish list. I will say though, that the Cheetah tracking at Mount Zebra is a most thrilling experience is you don't mind a bit of physical exertion.

Hi There

Thanks so much for the feedback and help. SG, that sounds like a great sighting. We had a similar incident in Addo, and did not even have a great sighting to go with it.
Our twosome is now a foursome, with a couple joining us for the trip. This has changed the dynamic slightly. We have decided to take the plunge and make this our first visit to MZNP. We will be spending 2 days in Addo, 2 in MZNP and a 1 night stopover in the Karoo National Park to break up the long drive back to CT.
One day, we will make it to Mokala.
