spray bottle added to the packing list!

Now we all know the gas fridge / freezers in the Desert Camps. In summer they struggle to keep the meat frozen, especially when they are full.

We use our towel and dampen it and fold it around the freezer section. It definitely helps:



Just remember dont soak the towel in water. We use a spray bottle to dampne the towel when it starts the dry.

We make 2 liters cooldrink bottles full of water, and also mix some nice fruitjuice concentrate in the bottles. Put in the fridge and next day cool.

Always keep WetWipes in car.

Always some biscuits, and coffee in bottle.

Make sure you put all your books in as well, bird, snake, mammals.

Apply some thought to your packing if you are going for any length of time :in order to avoid hauling everything out of the vehicle ( which can be exhausting and unpleasant in mid summer) we share tog bags. All the stuff that we both need for the first couple of days is in one bag, we then migrate to the next bag and so on.
We also do the same with our dry food boxes.
Wedge a bit of bubble wrap in between your bottled foodstuffs - it helps to prevent breakages but more importantly, it stops the rattling in your car on the bumpy roads
Scouter's sarong tip worked wonders. Wrapping yourself in a wet sarong during the heat of the day certainly helps to keep cool
An application of Handy Andy cleaner to your tyres every now and then does wonders to put off would be tyre munching lions at the wilderness camps. I have it on good authority that they don't like the smell of the ammonia
A couple of things that always come in handy:
Ziplock bags
Ice trays and those disposable plastic ice trays (available in most major grocery outlets)
Comfy fold up camping chairs
Oven mitts
Sharp knife
Table cloth
A couple of heavy duty pegs
Powerful spotlight

Good day all.
Something I do when camping is to shake clothes to be worn. Often spiders settle in the clothes, cool and dark.
Take footwear by the heel and hold upside down, bang together to get rid of scorpions or other creepy crawlies that may have gone inside the footwear.
If an unplanned braai, or other meal requiring frozen meat etc., is decided upon after a drive, pop the bonnet place the meat on the engine, close the bonnet. ± 20 minutes and the meat has thawed enough to cook.
That, if the kitchen sink, microwave and all the modern inconviences are left at home.
For flies at meal times I take the container which the meat was in and place a short distance away, far enough but not to disturb fellow campers. The flies are attracted to the raw meat smell and generally do not disturb us at meal times.

Good tips bokkie! I hold the toes and bang the shoes together. On a recent trip to neighbouring countries, my 'roomie' just packed away his washed shirts. He found the scorpion that stung him twice under the arm about 800 km later, and the poor thing is now very far from home. Needle tailed thank goodness.

Big iratation for mommy but if you stuff your old, dirty sock from the previous day inside your shoes they can't get in.

The idea with the flies and the meat sounds great, I use the same principal with bees you just spill some juice/ cold drink a litle way away and they go have a picnic over there.

Seeing the towel on the fridge as per Shane. When staying bungalows where the fridge is outside, I turn the frigde so the door faces a wall. Baboon proof.
Just love the sound of the geckos mating calls at night.
For the raiding monkeys & baboons, I let rip with a katty in their general direction. After three or four shots they get the messsage. After that one need only lift the katty and they move off.
A rubber snake also works wonders. Remember to move it from time to time.
I am given to believe that pool chlorine sprikled in around the braai/eating area keeps flies away.
Not used it, nor will I, for environmental reasons, as I have no idea of the impact it would have.
I have an Explorer caravan. At night I leave the stove/fridge slide outside. To prevent snakes etc gaining entrance there I place some foam rubber tubes in the gap. Seals off very well.

BB my Pharos dictionary shows Catty as another word for Kettie. Maybe just not used that often???
