A favourite time for many Kruger lovers, before the rains, with lots of animal visitors to waterholes.
The yellow-billed kites are back in the sky!

August is the only time we have been!

We had great sightings, warm and sunny days and I loved the dryness of the air! The day we left in mid August though there was some drizzle unusually!

I like your idea of having a month by month thread. Have you done October?

August is a good all round month. The weather is warming up. Waterholes are very productive. There is a mild chill in the air in the evenings and mornings.

The only problem with August is that too many other people share this view and it can be very, very busy, particularly on the day of the Skukuza Marathon.

Yes there is a long weekend in August with a public holiday on the 9th. That weekend should be busy! When is the marathon?

Your Tamboti pics look great MM - I can't wait to go there for the first time. Fingers crossed for number 40 tent!

Graham, the Skuks half marathon is always on the first Saturday in August. Anywhere in the central and northern regions should be fine. I have found that the Saturday of the race a nightmare on the main roads. After that it quietens down. If Women's day fally close to the weekend, it might be busier.

Taken the day after the marathon, close to Lower Sabie. Hardly a soul in sight.

For me too,Kruger means august or August means Kruger as most of my stays were ,are ,during this month. :D
Coming from Europe, you leave summer to be in winter Kruger but a winter we would enjoy in the northern hemisphere.
Cold during the nights that's true but so warm during the day under the african sun.
From misty morning to nice daily temperatures to some icy nights !
A yearly european weather cycle within 24 hours
A lot of nice sightings: no vegetation and active animals !It's so strange for me to see Kruger so green in your trip reports as i'm used to a dry winter vegetation .
What I miss in august is new born cute animals, snakes and mosquitoes (I'm joking for the last one !)
No rain or so little is also something unusual for me.
I have to find some illustrations of this feeling Kruger in august means to me .
The first one could be Misty Morning in Mopani....

Toronto, thanks for sharing your August experiences with us.
I also only used to go in winter, being concerned about malaria and the risk to children.
Now they are grown up so we brave it in summer and I just love the lush vegetation and migrant birds and animal babies and long days.
I still want to visit again in the dry season when the animals are more reliant on the waterholes!

I have always been in july/August. Last year we were there over the bank holiday and it was busy, so we just made our way to camp via the back roads and enjoyed the camp wildlife, this year we will arrive after the weekend

Mornings are cold but atmospheric, water holes and hides are great places to hang out...

the grass is straw and animals are easy to see but the surroundings tend to be very similar..

But we are hopefully going twice next year....an April trip

Lovely leopard shot. The lighting in the other shots is really nice and soft! Dawn or dusk? Have a lovely trip this August - maybe we will see you there? My dates are my signature..

Hello, please I need some info and suggestions from you.
I'm thinking to visit Kruger on next August, maybe three weeks.
What could be the max temperature in the day and lower in the night?
Is the north sector more warm than south?
Do you think is it possible to sleep in tent, or could be too cold?
Many thanks for your answer.
Bye,
Luca/Italy.

Hi Luca,

The temperatures in the evenings can become quite chilly at this time so it's best to make sure that you have warm clothing. The days are generally mild to warm and most times a T-shirt and shorts is still comfortable. I've stayed in a tent in August, and as long as you have an extra blanket or 2, it's really no problem.

That said, there can be cold snaps or heat waves too, which complicates the issue :) The further north you go, the warmer it gets although the temperature difference between the north and south is negligible.

Hi Luca :D

3 weeks in Kruger in August - sounds a brilliant plan!!
It still gets hot in August ... around 30 degrees, and it will be cold in a tent at night ... somewhere around 4degrees minimum :hmz: I'm saying that based on the weather in Kruger now
If you come prepared, raised off the ground in the tent, or a thick ground mattrass, you should be completely fine :D Wear a beany on you head at night, a couple of pairs of socks, and the cold will not have anything on you 8)
