Name a species of bird that eats the shell of the egg while the chick is hatching?

Yes, Tom, the great tit does do this; but I am looking for a Southern African bird that will do the same.

Okay, let me ask another Q:

In a perfect world, the best shape for a bird's egg - in terms of weight-saving, best use of space, and greatest strength - would be a perfect sphere (a ball). Why then are birds' eggs almost always oval shaped?

A quick fire from the hip. Answer 1: It is to prevent them from rolling away.
Answer 2: It is to accommodate the shape of the embryo.
Answer 3 The oval structure is stronger.

(I hope one is correct )

That is known as "egging" the answer along, Rooies. I'll wait to see what others have to say - hopefully they'll use more than their hip.
