African Green-pigeon(Treron calvus)

A shy bird found in small flocks in dense foliage. Quiet and unobtrusive and almost entirely arboreal, rarely coming to the ground. It feeds on fruit and can be locally common around fruiting fig trees (its gizzard is adapted for grinding fig seeds).

Physical characteristics:
When seen clambering around in a tre, the immediate impression is of a green, parrot-like bird. At closer range, this species is unmistakable with its gree-and-yellow plumage and chestnut vent. When feeding, it climbs about in fruiting trees, sometimes hangs upside down on branches to obtain fruit.

Habitat:
The African Green Pigeon inhabits the African forest, bushveld and savanna. Always associated with fruiting trees, especially figs.

After three years of trying to get a decent picture of an African Green Pigeon (no kidding) I finally succeeded last December. I found one feeding of a fig tree in Pretorius restcamp:

I found this one in September, last year, at Satara, feeding on a fig tree next to the parking lot in front of the main entrance. There were several in the tree at time - I even saw a Brown-headed Parrot in the adjacent tree, on that day.

Could not find a lot more info, but did add one paragraph to your original post as well as some names in other languages.

One of the easiest places to find these birds is in Lower Sabie. Carefully examine the trees in the area between the river and the bungalows. You are bound to find them there. The birds don’t always make a sound but if you know the call listen for that. In February we specifically visited Lower Sabie to see them. At first we could not find them but then one called and we found lots sitting in a tree we already walked pass!

I usually find them in the Sycamore Figs on the riverbank in front of the Skukuza restaurant.
This past weekend (4-5 March 2006) there were 25-30 of them feeding in the trees.

We saw this bird for the first time in the park in June 2006.
During our August visit we saw a tree full of them in the Maroelaloop +/- 30 birds.

Are they common birds but we always missed them or are they rare to the park?

Yep they are fusually there, as the trees frequently have fruit to eat.

They are common birds, but it took me three years to get decent pictures of them. About the only place where you'll get a decent photo opportunity is in the camps. You'll find them in fig trees (depending on the season) where they eat the fruits. Pretoriuskop and Skukuza are camps where they're frequently seen.

The trees bear fruit the whole year, mostly July to December. The tree can bear fruit a few times a year.

The Green Pigeon is a really beautiful member of the pigeon/dove family. We saw a few in a Tambotie tree near Letaba in June, but I was astounded earlier in the year when I saw a few in my garden in Pretoria!
This should be testimony that garden bird watching can be really rewarding and enjoyable!
