Something strange happened this afternoon,Gal was pacing again and I was trying to get her attention to try to calm her down and I whistled at her, just a gentle wolf whistle, well she looked at me and went to lay down and went to sleep. This happened a few times in the coarse of the afternoon with the same result.

Well if whistleling at her is what it takes to calm her down I will spend my days doing jut that.

Makes me think of a tune from The King And I, ( I whistle a happy tune and every single time, the happiness in the tune, convinces me that I'm not afraid.)

Worked today, hope its works tomorrow too.

Carol, Elsa, Grantmissy, Hilda ... thanks for the concern about Billy. :gflower:

Here is a report back of the ultrasound Billy underwent yesterday. The results were thumbs up - nothing obvious presented itself and the stomach, spleen, and liver seem fine. Of course, because the stomach had crumpled up - Billy had to be starved since midnight - the vet (strangely named Dr Collie  ) said that he wouldn't have been able to see an ulcer. He gave some sound suggestions and explanations - an excellent vet, really - and sent a report back to the referring vet. At the moment, the only stool Billy has passed so far since the ultrasound is still far too dark, but at least Billy hasn't vomited since. We're hoping that the bleeding is related only to a bad gastroenteritis or gastritis, or even worms, and not an erosion of the gut. In any case, he doesn't appear anaemic and is sprinting around the place with gusto. Got a script that will be filled tomorrow, for antinauseants, antibiotics, and something to reduce the production of acid in the stomach. This afternoon, after I had slept a couple of hours, he arrived at my bedside and gave one loud sharp bark - he was hungry and needed to be fed before the scheduled time: a great sign indeed, as was the speed with which he gulped that food down, Hopefully Billy's on the mend.

Took Billy to the gardens two mornings in a row and he trotted around for an hour each time; this is a good sign as it limits the diagnosis of anaemia, even though it must be said that his gums are too pale a pink for comfort. He has always eaten grass, usually at a rate faster than any sheep; yesterday was no exception as he climbed into a long, wet, sweet variety.

Sadly, when he got home he didn't want to eat a thing. We re-examined him and decided he was somewhat dehydrated. Out with the syringe and a rehydration solution we made up: poor Billy really didn't enjoy us pulling his jaws apart, and fought most of the way. Nevertheless, we got almost 100ml into his 14.4 kg frame. Then I had a brainwave - I gave him a bowl of the other dogs' Hills, and he gulped it down with gusto. It was then we realised that the dry biscuits we have been offering him for the past year and a half have been most unappetising, even for a dog that probably grew up on other canines' faeces. We decided we'll donate the food we have left over and switch him to Hills: the most important thing is not the cost but that he eats and drink well so that his red blood cells can rejuvenate themselves.

Billy's stools are still too black for comfort, but he is on anti-ulcer medication as well as an antibiotic to curb any gut infestation that might be present. We will also not exercise him too vigorously for the next couple of weeks and so give his body a chance to heal. He is the sweetest dog you will ever meet - without any doubt at all an earthbound angel - so we are praying often that he will be whole as soon as possible.

Thanks for the wonderful support, mites; all of you are a fantastic family!

OWN, I do hope Billy will be back to his own self soon, glad you are now giving him Hills, it is really good and I'm sure he will do well on it. I have gal on the hills for older dogs, and she loves it, and her physical condition is excellent, it's just the brain that's not good, but we are copping with that.

Big love for Billy from me. :k
