Maybe this was asked and answered before, but is it allowed to enter Addo from Colchester side towing an off-road trailer?

I see there is a notice board at the turn-off indicating no caravans, busses or trucks but nothing around trailers?

I intend visiting the park in early April and will be staying in the Main Rest Camp. My intention is to enter from
Colchester and then drive north through the park to the Main Camp.

Don't see that it will be a problem.

There are one or two steep ups and downs that could be a bit troublesome to those vehicles mentioned, but if you are pulling the trailer with a substantial vehicle you will be more than ok.

We are camping at Addo this weekend and towing a trailer, so I phone the Addo reception and they referred me to the South Gate office who informed me that they DO NOT ALLOW caravans or trailers in the southern part of Addo. This is the number to phone if you have any queries: 041 4680916.

I have also contacted them via e-mail and got the same response - no trailers allowed entering the park from Colchester side and driving up to the Main Camp.

It would be interesting to know why not? That road is doable with a trailer and even more so with an off-road trailer. Coming from the South it does not make sense that one has to travel all the way around the park to enter at the Main Gate only.

2. You cannot do it.

No problem BB, I am just as surprised as you are that it is not allowed.

Doable it certainly is, with the correct vehicle, i.e. why not allowed it provided the town vehicle is a 4Wd.

There are wine farms that do cake & coffee on Sunday afternoons that are a lot closer Blackie.

Maybe there are others interested as well.

Not sure what the fuss is all about. In July 2011 we slept our first night at Mathyholweni and proceeded up to main camp with a venter trailer behind a Kombi. The trailer had all our camping gear in. We saw heaps of elephants and one even swaggered towards us rather robustly, but we were stopped and the engine switched off so we could go nowhere in a hurry. The big brave fella moved off to the side and around the trailer as if there was nothing to it. So no problems what so ever. Only concern is having to reverse every time the kids thought they saw something as the trailer does not indicate reverse lights.

I guess if you get to the Mathyholweni gate with a trailer in tow and you are booked into the camp there, they will let you proceed. If you leave camp and proceed to the Main Camp you do not have to pass through the gate again and nobody will really know it.

However, if you get to the gate and advise them that you are on your way to the Main Camp you will most probably not be allowed to proceed.
