The situation in Mapungubwe is bad from what I was told. The road just before Dongola is washed away, the water is right up to Rhodes drift and I believe a car was washed away and 4 people (2 Adults and 2 children) died. One of them is reported to be a staff member of Mapungubwe.

Thanks for the replies NetEk and BrendaK. Sounds really bad - poor people - first the terrible drought and now the floods. Our thoughts and prayers goes out to them. :(

Does anybody know what the roads look like to Alldays. My husband is going up today (as soon as we get any news) SAP alldays says the roads near evangelina is also washed out.

The lastest news I have the water is just under the 2000 flood line and slowly going down. The water level is at about 2 feet measured 400 m in the veld from the upper lip on level ground. but all the flow backs (Koeloempies ect) are full.

He needs to go check on our staff staying and accomodation on the Private land neighbouring the Eastern part of the park on the west.

Hi Naomi, I called the park last week because we are going up there at the end of November. I was told that there has been some rain and that the park is looking great with lots of animals present as a result of the green grass.

Cant wait to get there.

Hallo NetEk! How are you? Of course I am  !!! We are going to Marakele this year - blame the high petrol price! :wall: Not that I am not looking forward to it - we LOVE Marakele!
But I just have to see a green Mapungubwe again after last year's visit. Maybe next December? :hmz:

Well if they lost your booking at Marakele, just keep on driving you know where to find me. Sitting under a big waterbessie tree drinking a beer watching time (and the Limpopo) going by.

A quick report back. Mapungubwe was looking amazing again. It looks like they have had a fair amount of rain and there was a lot of standing water in the veldt. Lots of animals around all looking in great condition. We saw a fair amount of elephant. Not as many as in previous visits but enough. No cats and no spoor either.

Birding was great as usual. Only saw one carmine bee eater but did see blue cheeked. The floods have damaged a large area around the park. The Den Staat road is all but impassable now. The top section of the road is fine but when it enters the park again at the bottom it has taken a hammering.

We went to the Samaria dams and saw some really good birds including crowned crane and flamingo. Lots of fair sized crocs in these ponds as well.

Maloutswa hide is still closed and I was amazed at how large the pan is now. It must have been really high because you can still see the marks on the trees where the water level was.

All in all a great trip as usual. Still not as spectacular as our first trip which was in 2008 I think. I don't think we will ever see it quite like that though

Thanks for the info Dave. 8)
And that some of the eles returned. 8) We've been waiting for the hide to be repaired but even when they do repair it next year with even now such a lot of water in the pan the animals will not be drinking at the hide now will they
