Thanks for the swerwer ID, Bushsnake (my "new thing" for today!), and for the interesting info on the brown-veined whites. They really are an amazing sight when they congregate in huge 'flocks'.

Can anyone help with an ID for these butterflies? Are there two (or even three) different sorts? Seen at Marakele on 10 April 2012.

arks,
The most obvious bfly shown is Junonia hierta, common name "Yellow Pansy". The orange one to the right is very difficult to see the entire underwing, but look at Byblia ilithyia, common name "Common Joker or Spotted Joker" and see what you think. (The vague brown one....can't tell, sorry.)

WoW, Africat, thanks!

I googled a bit and I think that the 'vague brown one' is the female yellow pansy :D

Hi

I saw this butterfly at Orpen in June 2012. I do not have a Butterfly book and would appreciate if anybody could identify it for me.

:yaya: Hi Leeukos, i might be wrong, maybe someone can make sure :)

African Monarch (Nymphalidae subfamily Danainae – Danaus chrysippus aegyptius)
They are common in South Africa and are found in almost all types of habitat except the desert.

Hi Philip

Thank you for the quick response. I am sure your id is correct. I "google" the name "African Monarch" and found a large number of images that look like the photo I submitted.

:D

Can anyone help with an ID for these two butterflies? The first I think may be a brownveined white?

Both seen at Mokala in late October 2012.

Hi arks,
I believe the last one is Colotis eris, commonly known as Banded Gold Tip. Thanks for sharing!
