Hi all!

Larks are, in many instances, still beyond me :wall:

Seen this oke in KTP, north of Nossob somewhere. Can anyone help?

(sorry I haven't figured out yet how to post decent size pics on the forum - I'm using Imageshack's "code for forums", and it doesn't matter what size the original is that I've posted on imageshack, when I post it here it's this minute size  , but if you click on it, it goes to a bigger size pic on Imageshack)

Hi DC

It looks like a Fawn Coloured Lark - they are common in Kgalagadi.

Regards

Niall.

Hi All

I would really appreciate any views on this one. The photo was taken during March 2010 in Kgalagadi. Unfortunately, I can't help with the sound. Behaviour wise it is also difficult to recall anything. It is also difficult to remember its actual size. By way of elmimination, I'm thinking maybe Spike-heeled Lark (though the beek troubles me) but I tend to lean towards Fawn-coloured Lark. The colour is a bit red (not enought white), but it seems as if you get the darker variant as well. It is aparently also common in the Kalahari.

Maybe Lrk - Fawn-coloured, Spike-heeled by engela2dup

Thanks

Hi Obelix. It's a Fawn coloured Lark. They are one of the most common Larks in Kgalagadi.

Spike Heeled has a longer more slender bill, very short tail and very upright posture. They tend to be more terrestrial than other larks, not perching in trees too often.

Some pics for comparison here:

Spike-heeled: http://www.niall.co.za/Species/bird-pages/506.htm
Fawn-coloured: http://www.niall.co.za/Species/bird-pages/497.htm

Cheers

Niall.

Saw this bird in December in Kgalagadi. Have no idee. Was far off but had to take a pic because I haven't seen one before.
Sorry for poor quality

Hi LL - it looks like a leucistic bird - my best guess would be Fawn coloured Lark, which is one of the more common Larks in KTP.

Cheers

Niall.

KTP has given me some questions of my own.

There were little ones too!!

Possibly a lark

I know that this is a long list, but I was very proud of myself for managing to ID the Familiar and Ant-eating Chat, a Marico Flycatcher, a Green Winged Ptyllia, a Violet Cheeked and Black faced Waxbill and a Karoo Scrub Robin, so I am definitely improving.

Appreciate any help you can give me.

We have 2 LBJ's for ID. :D

Both from Kgalagadi.

Gut instinct say Sabota on the second. Could BOTH be Sabotas? Totally confusing myself.

Guinea Pig, to me they both look like Fawn-coloured Larks.
