Re: News on injured cheetah mum near Urikaruus?

Morning TanniB, thanks for highlighting her problem. We were in Urikaruus for 6 days in December, she was in the area often. On chrismas day we just arrived back from a drive around 12:00. She was there with her cubs and caught a Springbok about 75-100mm from the waterhole. She dragged it to the opposite side of the river bed where they all feasted for about 3 hours. Later the afternoon they moved closer to the waterhole directly opposite us (unit no. 4) and just after 17:00 came down to drink. They didn't drink long and moved off down river.

I had to stop Tracy from going to Eric (the camp managed) to radio KG to come help her as she was limping badly. Tracy thought she had broken her leg and the whole family would perish if she couldn't hunt.

But let me reassure you that she had been limping before the hunt and she easily managed to catch that Springbok.

KG, thanks for the updates - much appreciate. I was busy in the bed room when I heard Tracy say she is off to Eric to call you to come help. Hahahaha - I stopped her just in time otherwise you would have had a women on the radio crying ..........

I have attached a few images of them at the waterhole. Take note of their bellies:: Enjoy !

Lovely pics of Gertie and her little trio Shane. :)
We saw her regularly over our 3 day stay at Urikaruus as well - you can tell Tracy that on the 29.12 she was not limping at all...:) :)

Cheetah brothers at Kgalagadi near Mata Mata

Unread postby HEATHER LOUBSER » Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:24 am

There were four brothers that we sighted at the 14th waterhole that were involved in an excursion with lions and one of the brothers lost his life in Nov 2012, the other three survived however one of the survivals had a broken leg, If anybody has been there since and spooted these cheetahs can you let me know whether this injured cheetah is still around.

Just a quick update.

Was up MM way for 8 days and saw Gertie and her cubs 4 times. Once making a kill, 2 other times on a kill and 1 other time just wandering around.

The cubs are so much bigger and doing well. They're chasing away the annoying jackals now, rather than mum having to keep them away.

I actually only saw Gertie waslking once in this time and she had a slight limp, but Anne-Marie said she was fine a few days later. Either way - it definitely doesn't impede her huntung abilities. She was awesome

Here's one of her and her offspring taken on 29 January. I saw them many times over a 10 day period and only once was she limping badly. That was shortly after she had made a kill. Perhaps it's an injury that gets aggravated after serious speed. Or just another thorn? Either way, she seems to cope very well with it.

Hi Ice and Anne-Marie,
You are right there is no cheetah identification thread on the forum.
I spoke to Gus about this a while ago as he wanted to continue the monitoring of the cheetahs in the park in a similar manner to the leopards.
What we were hoping was to produce a cheetah guide like the leopard one. This would require a lot less work because in principle Gus has a very good photographic record of all the cheetahs in the park.
Unfortunately, since Gus has been writing up his research for the past year nothing has been done on this yet.
I will speak to him and see if we can get something organised.
Cheers

Please use the online form or download the spreadsheet to report leopard sightings.
You can also download a free copy of the identification guides for KTP and Augrabies.

Is this Gertie with her cubs? Seen north of Dalkieth approx ten days ago. Came across them a few minutes before she made a successful springbok kill so the photos are a bit hurried.

it seems there is a big mistake
in fact Gertie is Elena, the famous Elena, the mother of Simon and Garfunkel and the poor Anton who finished lamentably

I can't remember who says for the first time : it's Gertie when I saw/showed (in my TR) Mum and the 3 little cats in September 2012 :hmz:

After checking the spots (mostly inside the front legs) with old pictures (2009 and 2010) this mum Cheetah is ELENA
I'm very sorry for this big error  ... but is a very formidable news, we found again Elena who seems vanished...

That is exciting news, anne-marie! Who was it who had named her Gertie and thought that she was a new cheetah mum? Well done on your discovering her true identity!

Will be following your and Lionspoon's further research with interest  Clearly it's possible even for the most experienced to have a MIS-ID. I'm sure that the Mills will be interested in what you and Lionspoon have discovered. Elena/Gertie is proving to be one impressive mom!

:yaya: arks!

There is a Gertie as well. It's just that all of us who were in the park since last year,
believed that Elena is Gertie because some fellow traveller had told us in the park.
We never bothered to check spots. :slap:

However, the SO & I were back at the start of October this year and came a cross
a single cheetahlady. Out of a hunch I compared her to Lisette and found out it was
her indeed!

So, then I thought, I should look into 'Gertie' as well and was completely flabbergasted
when I realized it was Elena.

But remembering that both, Lisette and Elena were really visible back in 2010 and 2011
and hardly anyone has seen the real Gertie, it does makes sense as well (on top of the
correct spots that is  ).

I still got a batch of three of whom I don't know who they are.
Summer 2014 - Oz! It was awesome!
