January 2013 Rains/Floods in Kruger

Post subject: January 2013 Rains/Floods in Kruger

I have to distress a call that kruger will be hit with 75mm to 100mm rain in the northern parts.

skukuza and central will feel around 25-50mm rain .

Does anybody know what the rain last year was ? that caused such damage ? i think it was above 200mm ....

the trooper will be going to kruger this year !
march-april still have to decide !

Trooper,

Guess you will only know once your own question is answered but I'm wondering how this much rain in the north will affect the following rivers: Olifants, Letaba, Sand, Sabie. I don't know what any of these rivers' catchment areas are:-(

I was in Kruger during January 2011. The country received a lot of rain during December 2010 and even into January 2011. The rivers above were all in flood. Not as much as during the 2000 or 2012 floods but still pretty amazing to see. That year I took more pictures of the rivers than of wild life. In January 2012, I crossed crocodile bridge hours before the floods engulfed the bridge. It is January 2013 now and I'm in Kruger again. Water levels in these rivers seem fairly low (well at least in my experience from the last few years....).

I am really wondering, what is going to happen this year....

Can just add that its raining hard at the moment in southern Mpumalanga from where the Olifants river flow.

If it also rains in Central KNP one can expect an increase in flow. We noticed on 28 Dec that the Olifants flowed faster and then it subsided again. On the 31 Dec when we left Balule we had a good thunderstorm. With more rain coming you will see an increase but if it will reach the same height than last year is difficult to say.

The low water bridges will be the first to be flooded, but it seems unreal when looking at last years floods to think that it happened and even flowed over the main Olifants bridge on the tar road. :roll:

haai haai thanks for the replies, im more afraid of having another january 2012 !!! but it looks like it will be just around 100mm , not 150-250mm hopefully .

the rains are terrible up in the north so you must advise anybody who doesnt have updates to weather to be very cautious near camps with rivers and low bridges will most probably have been flooded by 2 am saturday morning .

im hoping the weather plays along this january , because im going in april or march and dont want it to look like a warzone so i thought those with internet over in the bush can spread some news

Pafuri Camp got 60 mm over the past two days, which is hardly dramatic. They reported it was still raining there this morning.

Glad the north is getting some rain at last. Hope it continues for a while. Saw heartbreaking photos in the paper last week - drought around Thoyandou area, which is not a million miles from KNP.

Heavy rains over eastern and northern parts of South Africa this weekend.

These heavy rains are also likely to have serious impact on the opening day of the AFCON football tournament starting on Saturday at the National Stadium in Johannesburg.

The neighbouring countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and southern Mozambique will also be affected by these adverse weather conditions.

Simon Gear of SABC TV weather & 50/50 fame reported this morning on Radio 702 that the Shingwedzi river is running from bank to bank .

I just saw photos of the floods in the Northern Part of Kruger!!! It is amazing!! If you know the northern part of Kruger this will absoloutely bowl you over!! :big_eyes:

Pafuri Camp is now at 200 mm or so, which is a lot, but not a record.

The airstrip has flooded, and at some point the H1-9 tar road flooded just east of Madzitsomo Pan, i.e. about 500 meters north of Luvuvhu Bridge.

The Luvuvhu River is running bank to bank. Here's the view from the southern bridge, where the riverbed is normally bone dry.
