07.11.

So it was time to leave Nossob and move back to the Aoub River….
But not without a last early morning drive….

Of course as usual I could not resist taking some sunrise photos

I wanted to drive up till Kwang, but a couple of kilometres before reaching the waterhole I spotted something in the riverbed…
Unfortunately a bit too far away for decent pics, yet still….
A Jackal with pups 8)

Checking them with the binoculars showed that Mum had to care for 5 youngsters  , good grief, poor Mum… :slap:

I stayed with them for quite a while, but as it did not seem that they were going to move closer to the road I turned the car and headed back to Nossob.

Next sighting another Whistling Rat.

When approaching Cubitje Quap I just realised, I had missed Hyenas at the waterhole.
Mum and two youngsters were already swiftly moving away… :wall:

Ok, but still I stopped at Cubitje and enjoyed the many Doves coming for a drink in the morning.

Then it was finally time to say goodbye and drive back to the camp.
Breakfast and packing the car. After everything was done we said goodbye at reception handed over the keys and were on our way to Kalahari Tented Camp....

To be continued....

Lovely sunrise pictures katydownunder!

Awesome Jackal with five babies sighting, and a very cute Whistling Rat! Fortunately you didn't completely missed the Hyenas! And what a lot of thirsty Doves! Awesome sightings!

Looking forward to what you saw at the Kalahari Tented Camp!

hilda, Cubitje Quap is always great for Dove and Sandgrouse pics.
And as there are so many birdies around it's a favoured hunting ground for Lanner Falcons.....
It's amazing to see them hunt, it's such highspeed action you just sit there an watch in awe.
Always feel bad for the prey though :|

The recipe..... :hmz:

There is not really a recipe....
I can not even tell you the quantities, as I did not have a scale and measuring cup....
I had a 1kg bag of flour and it made about 7-8 roosterkoek for 3 times. And I needed about one of the big SANPARKS mugs in the accomodation of luke warm water.

I made a bread dough using bread flour, instant yeast, salt, oil, sugar/syrup and warm water.
The dough should not be too dry (they get too firm) or too wet (they stick to the grid).
Let the dough prove for a couple of hours, form the rolls (the diameter of a tennis ball and about 2cm thick), thoroughly dust them with flour and place them on the grid.
It took me a few time to find the right hight for the grid. The first time the grid was too high, so I lowered it later to make the nice golden and crisp.
If you are not sure if they are ready take one and cut it open.
They needed between 15 to 20 minutes. Keep turning them regularly the whole time.
When I made them at Mata Mata I nearly burned them, as a Lion was visiting the waterhole while they were on the grid

Best when they were still hot

Hope this helps Pumbaa

07.11. Part Two

Just after we had passed Rooikop a jackal Mum with a youngster was running towards the road. 8)

Then they passed the road right in front of our car….

At Maries Loop we looked for the Spotted Eagle Owls and found them again, even after they had moved to another tree….

Image

Later back on the main road we spotted one of those shy Steenboks

Image
Larger View

And this unfortunate fellow in a tree….
We were wondering who had killed the Springhare, and we guessed that it might have been a Giant Eagle Owl….. :hmz:

Image
Larger View

At Kaspersdraai this guy was having a nap.

Image
Larger View

We met some good friends on the road who were moving up to Grootkolk and after a nice little breakfast at Dikbaardskolk we were on the upper dunes road leaving the Nossob River behind.

Here we spotted some Oryx youngsters. Mum and dad were lying in the shade, but the youngsters were curious.

A Dunes Road Roadblock

Just north of Kamqua a Kori Bustardwas standing in the shade of a tree.

Image

And we found this beautiful Tawny eagle at the 13th Borehole.

Image
Larger View

Just after we had entered the lower entrance to the 14th borehole we spotted this…

Image
Larger View

The first of many, many Wildcats that we saw on this years trip….
I hope you can cope seeing loads of AWC pics in the next upcoming parts.
It was plain unbelievable how many Wildcats we saw between Sitzas and the 13th Borehole…

And then she was back to sleep…

At Craig Lockhardt a Vulture was having a drink.

The Bee-eaters were very busy catching food for the offspring

Image

Then we arrived at Kalahari Tented Camp, we checked at the reception which tent we got and moved in…

Image

As it had been quite a long drive from Nossob we decided that we would spend the rest of the afternoon in camp and enjoy the beautiful surroundings…..

Image

Oh and more sunset pics

Image

Image

Always fascinating to see the clouds…

Image

After we had dinner and enjoying a glass of wine sitting outside, we herd something at the waterhole.
We checked with binoculars and couldn’t believe our eyes.
There was an Eland herd having a drink, we roughly counted 40-50 animals. :sup:
It was unbelievable, unfortunately the waterhole is a bit too far away for any good photos.
But at least you can see they were there

magnificent to see the kill of an Owl in a tree, the little Jackals, the cat at the entrance of the 14th... it's also one of mine  , still a lot of Elands during the night at the camps

and...and... and
