Looking carefully at the bird, you can see in places the feathers are going black in the places where you would expect them to go black in adult jackal buzzard. So IMO its a sub adult Jackal Buzzard.

I'm overseas at the moment and don't have any SA books with me at the moment, but your first one looks like a juv Montagu's Harrier. Juv Pallid should have barring on the primaries.

Saw this near Balule in September of this year:

Any ideas (bear in mind that I am a complete novice)?

Hi Albert

I'd say its a juvenile Martial Eagle.

Thanks,
I was not sure about this; thought it may be a juvenile Crowned Eagle. Difficult to decide on the coloration based on the illustrations in the Sasol book.

Saw this one on top of the mountains near Magoebas Kloof yesterday.

I'm leaning towards Steppe Buzzard - hoping for Forest Buzzard - but then it may be something completely different as well!

What is your verdict - and why? (so we can learn too!)

It was VERY far away and a lot of heat interference - so the image is not the quality I would like, but should suffice for ID.

Hi Johannes, this is definitely a Steppe Buzzard. One of the main features used to distinguish between Steppe and Forest is shown very well in this picture, and that is the markings on the flanks. Steppe Buzzard has barred flanks (as shown here), whereas Forest Buzzard has more blotched flanks.

Spot on, and to add to Matt's reply, the pale band is also clearly visible across the breast.
