The pool below Mpondo had one more surprise for us when we slowed down to see whether the lions had moved. There was something moving in the water and it was not the jacana either. All we saw to start with was the head but slowly the rest of the body appeared as the lizard came out to sun itself

Mpondo dam had just become one of our favourite places, what we did not realise until we got home was that the lizard had been there all the time. As can be seen below it just goes to show that you should look the whole scene over not just a small piece of it.

Image

It was time to head for Afsaal for some food, breakfast was a long time past but we had a few more sightings on the dusty roads including this crocodile crossing the Muhlambamavube River. The croc is not as big as it first looks; the Natal spurfowl was looking for food but got none from us and this bushbuck was kind enough not to disappear into the bush.

Once on the H3 our sightings dropped off to some distant giraffe but we were soon eating at Afsaal.

Tuesday afternoon will follow soon

Hi Welshboy,
Wonderful sightings and photos. I've yet to see African Wild Dogs in Kruger but I'm glad that you did.

That he did, what I've noticed looking back through our pictures is that the sightings on the dirt roads are better and I think that is due to the lack of traffic. On the way between Crocodile Bridge and Afsaal we cannot passed more than 15 cars and apart from the ones at Mpondo most seemed in a hurry.

I'm glad to say that the flu has passed Philip1 just in time for Christmas

We will be back at Mpondo sometime between the 2nd and the 5th June next year when we are staying in the south of the park.

Afsaal was quite busy with people eating but our sightings did not stop. There were plenty of birds around with the usual suspects having poor table manners.

Image

Even this starling was getting in on the act along with this pigeon looking for scraps.

Image

Image

This Cardinal woodpecker was also on the hunt for food (from our book I hope I’m right?)

Image

We also picked out this lizard and this butterfly in the leaf litter but are not sure what they are, I sure someone will know and put me right.

Image

Image

We were soon on the road again and came across this lonely giraffe in one of the river beds drinking from what is I assume an elephant dug hole.

Image

I’d turned the car engine off when we arrived but had to start up again to let another car past which caused us to get the evil eye from the giraffe but he soon returned to his drink.

Image

Image

That’s all for now as it’s time for the festivities to start

I’d like to wish everyone a happy Xmas and a prosperous New Year

Wow! So many birds on that table at Afsaal Welshboy! Beautiful bird pictures, especially the Woodpecker!

Hope someone can identify the Lizard and Butterfly for you! I have tried, but I don't have enough knowledge to even dare to name them!

The Giraffe definitely found some water! So glad for him!
