I came across a covey of crested francolins messing about in a rhino midden right next to the road. I never say no to an opportunity to get photographs of birds that allow one to get really up close, no matter how common a species it may be. So, I parked at an opportune angle to shoot this cock. At first it just scratched about in the midden, looking to find food.

Suddenly a grasshopper alighted on the edge of the midden. In a flash the francolin snatched it up…

…and moments later the large insect disappeared down the cock’s throat! Birds certainly do not chew!

These francolins are omnivorous, but their diet preference shifts seasonally – in summer they feed mainly on insects while in winter it is mainly herbivorous (underground corms and bulbs, above ground shoots, leaves, fruits and berries) due to the lack of prey availability.

Crested francolins feature frequently on the menu of raptors like eagles (Martial, Wahlberg's and African hawk-), falcons (Peregrine and Lanner) and black sparrowhawks.

These francolins pair up annually with males competing for mates, with interaction often resulting in vicious fights with males striking each other with spurs. Pairs often monogomously remain together for as long as 10 months.
