During a stay at the camp over Easter this year, there was a photo of the pygmy posted in reception under birds of B&D. We enquired, but noone could tell us where the picture was taken.

I will once again be visiting B&D for Christmas and would like to find out whereabouts these little guys hang out?

Hi Linz and a very warm welcome to the forum! :D

We saw one this year in Feb on the road outside Shingwedzi camp.
Its a common Summer visitor and sure it will be found all over in Kruger.

Don't look for them near water. Like almost 66% of the world's Kingfisher species, they don't catch fish so they are usually away from water. They hunt from low perches, catching insects on the ground. They live singly and are sparsely distributed in our area.

Just because they mainly feed on terrestrial prey it doesn't follow that they never occur near water. I see them at Pafuri Camp, where they nest, and that camp is right on the Luvuvhu River.
