Confusing one indeed Johannes.

I am trying to decide between Juvenile Little Sparrowhawk and Juvenile Shikra.

I don't have a field guide with me, if nobody else comments on this little fellow, I will check tonight when I get home.

It looks like a steppe buzzard to me.

That crossed my mind Adrian, but this raptor looks very small to me. Maybe it is the way to image was cropped that gives it that appearance.

Johannes, seeing as you had the sighting, would you say this was a big bird? Also when did you see it?

You have got that right. Hopefully this weekend I can brush up on my ID skills again.

I|saw this bird near Lower Sabie at the end of October and thought it was a juvenile fish eagle but the bright yellow eye has me confused. I D would be really appreciated.I wondered about a juvenile snake eagle but the bill looks too heavy.Hoped it might be a young osprey but I don't think so, really.

First look says Osprey to me too but I think it may be a juvy Martial. But I will let the experts give you the right answer!

what about a Black-chested Snake-Eagle

I wondered about a juv martial eagle, MA but the legs look bare.....................
I wondered about a juv Blackchested snake eagle, AM but the beak looks heavy and sasol says light brown underparts...............

but not a lot of juvenils with big yellow eyes

Good point Anna-Marie. [ i'm still secretly hoping it might be an osprey.........]

I'm also no expert but I think what is causing problems here is that this bird may be wet and the feathers are showing some of the dawn feathers...therefore giving the bird a whiter appearance than usual. That said the featherless grey Tarsis and yellow eye point to the snake eagle family! It looks like a Juv bird so I would say either Black chested snake eagle or Brown Snake eagle. I still tend to say more likely a Brown Snake eagle Juv...
