Hi All,

Just got back from a weekend in Bontle, it is DRY!!
Although there are signs of green coming through, it is eaten quickly.

According to the person at the reception, there were already about 50 Impala's dead, and several kudu's.

We have also seen some carcasses lying in the veld.

It is BAD

Regards

We had about 30mm last night (Monday night). Altough it is gettig better, we still need quite a lot more. Biggest problem currently is overgrazing in the lower parts of the park. Also experienced some warthog and especially kudu not in a good condition.

Again 50mm Friday night (26th). Was quite a storm, but well needed rains.

Only a few millimetres the past week, but huge thunderstorms. Another storm at the moment, altough it looks like we could have some rain. The veld in Marakele looks better and much greener than a few weeks ago. I think this weekend will be good for rain, had up to 43 degrees the past three days.

Hi there,

We have never been to Marakele and think about going there next year in October.
Having read the posts regarding the very dry conditions and animals starving to death I wondered if this is normal for October or if this was an exception at Marakele due to the extremely dry conditions.

Does anyone have any experiences regarding the conditions in Marakele in October in the last years?

Thank you.

Nina

Unfortunately I cannot help you out Nina - it was our first visit to Marakele in October - we usually go during the first half of the year. :)

I sincerely hope that Marakele received a share of the wonderful rains we had over the weekend - we in Wierdapark in Centurion had 92mm!!

Very good news - we received nearly 100mm of rain. Was in the Park Saturday and looks totally different from a few weeks ago.

Nina, we normally receive our first rains from the 10th of October. It is still very dry that time of year until at least middle November. If you want to see animals, it will be the better time to go. If you want scenery, it is very green and beautiful during the rainy season, so suggest anything from end of November will be better.

We had 30-50mm in different areas on Tuesday. Been up to the towers yesterday (Wednesday) and if you want to see a wet Marakele, now is the time - water all over.
