What a great sighting LEIGHVLASSO, I love to watch the little things, its not all about the lions :D

At least this kill has very few sound effects right? Glad you managed to capture this one

Are burrowing asp snakes represented in Kruger? I guess if they are, recorded sightings are rare?

Yes definitely. They are extremely common in the nearby private reserves and Hoedspruit area, where it is easier to go and look for snakes. I have found 1 or 2 dead ones on the road in Kruger as well.

On that unfortunate note I must say we were in Punda Maria last weekend and after going out early in the morning for a drive and not seeing a single snake we found 3 dead one's on the way back. People just don't look where they are driving! Just grats me hey.... 3 dead snakes were red lipped herald; schegel's blind snake and a stiletto snake. Would have been lifers for me ..... :sniper: :rtm:

Hi - just back from KTP and was wondering if anyone knew where I could buy some snake "tongs" - not the one with the hook at the end but the ones with the tongs ? Preferably somewhere near Cape Town but am happy to order from anywhere in SA .... Thanks ..

I would suggest you contact Tony Phelps (armata on the forum), or Johan Marais to ask where you can get them. Johan's contact details should be on his website (http://www.reptileventures.com/).

(Tongs are of course not allowed in KTP :D )

My wife is deathly afraid of snakes, so I promised her I would find out from the people who know Kruger National Park better than any others, the best times to visit the Park to reduce the chances of any snake encounters. What time of the year (months, etc.) would you recommend to have the LEAST chance of seeing snakes?

Your chance of meeting a snake is rather slim at any time of the year. You may see some when driving around, but then you are perfectly save in your vehicle. In camp snakes are not often seen.

Winter is the best time, if that is to be your consideration, as the snakes are less active.

But the bottom line is that this is not something you should be concerned about.

Hi Kaizer
I have well over 100 Kruger trips under my belt, Have seen only 2 snakes, and believe me , they move away from vehicles and people very quickly. They don't like humans, and their vehicles even less.
And as Imberbe has said, they will be less active in our winter.(May to August)
Please come over and enjoy our wonderful Park.
If you read through some of the travel tales you will find that it is a very rare occurrence to see a snake, in fact us locals and regulars to the Kruger give  to anyone who has managed to find a snake , we get quite excited if we do see one.
It is easier to find wild dog , and not many people get to see them.

Definitely go in the winter months - you will see no snakes and very few reptiles. During our visit in December last year we saw a total of 9 snakes - a spitting cobra right at the doorway of the Mopani shop, one "strolling" thru a picnic spot, One slithered right over my daughter-in-law's foot at Shimuwini, two in the rocks in camp & the rest on the road so not always that unusual to see snakes in the summer.

I am in the group that has hardly ever seen snakes in the camps on our visits to KNP. But winter months would obviously be the better time to try and avoid snakes.

I would agree with Dinkybird. In 6 trips to Kruger we have only seen 2 snakes (in the road) but they slipped away pretty fast when our car approached. Winter months are the best as has been said. I wish you a wonderful trip to Kruger and hope you have no snake sightings but plenty of others.

PS; I find that if you go in July/Aug the lush bush and grass has dried and you are likely to see more animals a bit further away from the road, which with the lush growth of summer you may miss.

When I saw the topic title I was going to offer advice on how to find snakes..... :D

Which you can do, even in winter (have seen snakes virtually every trip in May/June/July), but as everybody has said, they are shy and move away quite rapidly. And I have never seen a snake inside any of the camps in winter (this is over a period of just about 50 years of going to the park).
