Did not know that small children were allowed on trails? Or is this by special arrangement?

@Silver 2012,

Kids are welcome and no special arrangements have to be made to join the Nossob 4x4 Eco-Trail.

We will be doing the trail on 11 Feb 2013. Just a few questions (for now) :

1. Do I need a seed cover for my vehicle (Defender 110)
2. Can you tell me how many vehicles are booked for this period?

Dear all,

I am new on this part of the forum, and I wanted to see whether someone has experience or advise:

we are in our early 60'ies but still looking for new adventures! After having visited Kgalagadi twice we strongly consider to participate in the Nossob 4x4 Eco trail to get the ultimate Kgalagadi feeling.

But..... we (in particular my wife) do not look forward camping in a tent somewhere in the wild in an unfenced camp. We came across some rental companies (we are Europeans) that rent out small campers based upon a Nissan Patrol Single Cap chassis, a Nissan NP300 chassis or even one based upon a Toyota Hilux.

Has someone experience with driving such a car on the trail? Has someone experience with renting such a car in Upington (I am aware that there are Hiluxes with roof tents for hire in Upington, but we prefer a more rigid wall between nature and us while asleep......)

Look forward fot any updates from your side.

Papadoc

Hi Papadoc

A Nissan Patrol 4x4 or a Hilux 4x4 will both make the trail with ease but Nissan NP300 might battle a bit on the dune crests as the vehicle is a little low and quite long.
We have done the Nossob Eco Trail with people sleeping in ground tents (canvas & ripstop types) as well as conventional roof top tents with no issue. I am in fact taking my folks late 60s on the trail next week and they will be staying in a canavs dome tent and I dont believe we will have any issues.

There is a company in Upington that hires out cruisers like this http://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/blog/toyota-land-cruiser-4x4-pop-top-camper-video-review/ which might be an option. I will try and find the company name for you.

Hope that helps

Hi Papadoc,

I am in the quoted age group and did the trail in 2011 in a Hilux 4x4.

There were roof and ground tents on our trip, in a circle around the fire area.

You camp at designated sites, so maybe the animals are used to humans there. Apart from the occasional jackal spoor, we didn't have anything else in camp at night.

I would strongly recommend that you do it, without 'extra' precautions. The guides are excellent and can handle any situation, as long as the guests obey.
