Hi there UMAR,

You will have coverage up to about 10Km out of Twee Rivieren and after that nothing, here and there at certain wilderness camps there are little coverage, if you are at Mata-Mata you will need to have a Namibian service provider card for signal.

Otherwise if it is really important that you have signal I would suggest hiring a satellite phone.

Why doesn't roaming work there? As I have roaming on my phone and did not get any signal from Nam side.

I was also wondering but looking forward to having no contact with the outside world for a couple of days.

The reason I was wondering: if you get into trouble, say your car breaks down, and you have no signal, how long before they find you.....

@picnic - I have Vodacom International Roaming and on several occasions could not get any signal at Mata Mata - I really thought I should get it via the Namibian Vodacom, as the border post is right there!!

On the other hand, got superb Namibian signal from the lookout deck at Gharagab (even e-mails on Blackberry). Slight signal in one specific spot at the entrance to Grootkolk camp, on and off signal at Kieliekrankie (SMS OK). Good reception at TR - as everyone has said.

Guinea Pig - when in KTP you "sign out" of each camp everytime you go for a drive, stating where you are going, so, if you do not return, a search party can be sent out. Also there are so few roads, that someone would probably find you if you broke down. None of the cell signals work outside the camps, anyway.

I'd just like to point out that with a UK sim card (o2) in mine and my girlfriends phones on our recent trip to KTP, we had no signal at all in TR, or indeed any of the park. We were expecting to be able to use phones but had nothing once we went past Askham.

IS there internet in any of the 3 large camps?

All 3 camps have internet at reception but I don't know if it is available to the public, you will have to ask them. Internet via cell only at Twee Rivieren.

When I went to Namibia, I found their service to be intermittant. Maybe that is why mites got nothing at MM.

You would sms, and it came through hours later.

This may sound a bit daft, coming all the way to Kgalagadi and wanting to surf the net! We are travelling else-where in SA and know we will be able to get connections, but is there any reception in the park? I have heard that you can get it at 2R? Thanks

Hi there Expat,

For good reliable signal, you will only find that at Twee Rivieren. The rest of the park doesn’t have signal, it also all depends on the weather. On overcast days or during rain storms Twee Rivieren also battles to get signal.

Thanks, Dotty and KG! Less reception the better, as far as I am concerned, although many will not agree. I come for peace of heart! My favourite place does not really need people staring at laptops instead of their surroundings!
