This section of the road has consistently been good to me for elephants. Last year we saw mating giraffes, two male lions and a small herd of sable, all within one hour.

Image of sable, for those who think it might be waterbuc :P

Probably just me, but recently(last two years), I have seen less on this road than a few years ago.
I have had many lion sightings on this road especially around Siloweni dam.
But after the dam was drained, my luck has gone.
I also just missed sable sightings twice on this road :wall: .
Great road for elephants!
Whenever I do this road I have to go to Leeupan.
There is always something to see and great for birding!

Has anyone else also experienced this road getting 'slow' on sightings?

In my opinion you have to drive this road as early as possible, due to the High volumes of traffic {especially during public holidays}. We've had Lion sightings on most of our trips down this road. Last December they were often seen at the Tablets.
In 2005 a pride of Lions took down a Giraffe about 50 - 100m after the turn off to the road linking the H4-1 and the H1-2. We were at Nkulu picnic site when people told us about what they witnessed  . It happened at about 08:30 in the morning. They took the Giraffe down in the road and it caused major traffic congestions in all 3 directions.

We also try not to miss Maroela Loop as we had magnificent Lion, Leopard and Wild Dog sightings on this little loop. Sometimes it's full of sightings and sometimes there's NONE! We've even had it without an Impala on the loop! Our very first Lion sighting in the park was on Maroela loop back in 2004, maybe that's why this road is so special to me :hmz:

We also managed to see cheetah on H1-2 once and only two Leopard sightings.

We drive this road every year, but we prefer to rather drive the S36 and then the S34 towards Tshokwane as it's often very rewarding! We spent almost 3 hours with a coalition of 4 young male lions on the S34 without any cars joining us! :cam:. They had a stare off with a herd of buffalo and we thought the we might be lucky but..... nothing happened!

{For the record, we also saw Sable at the S33 / S36 junction two years back, and I'm almost sure it wasn't Waterbuck as there was no ring on it's ..... and the animal was a completely different colour! :twisted: }

Agreed Shushin!
A long road of both abundance, and quiet!

I have often had hyenas on the part near Skukuza, and often nyala near the H12 high green bridge, but have missed the cats, and the sable too! Forumites have had good sightings of cheetah on the road as well!

I will be in Skukuza in a week, and will do the whole H1-2 while on our way to Letaba, at the best time of day  I will report back on what I see

On 16 June this year we were traveling north on the road when we saw a side-striped jackal. (picture quality is bad but I am convinced it was a ssj and not a bbj). This was a couple of km north of the H12 junction.
Image

As we left the scene these guys came running down the road
Image
There were seven of them

They were constantly moving and near the Maroela loop they disappeared into the bush. We followed them about 6 km. The first pic was taken 8:51pm and the last at 9:14pm, so we had a good 25 minutes with these guys.

Must be honest, I have found this stretch road to be quite quiet. Despite its reputation.

Tschok to Satara is a lot more productive.
