....they were also reported/spotted in skukuza end of june this year during the holidays, we left the absa guesthouse (10 children in our group..) and the next night one was spotted in the garden of the house... think the children were too noisy the night before !!
We did report, and also told them were they are coming through the fence near the absa house, no feedback etc. Did also find out that final year students are busy with a study project on the behaviour of the skukuza/village hyena clan's behaviour ( to those away from human habitation) as they apparently only eat/scavenge from the rubbish bins in the village. The den near scientific services apparently accounts for 19 hyenas.

But surely they should have done someting by now to the fence..... :hmz:

Was there 4 and 5 Oct. There were 2 hyenas at the fence next to the safari tents. I saw nothing inside the camp though. What a thrilling experience tho!!!!!

Hi All

I contacted Peter Dlamini, the Hospitality Services Manager at Skukuza the next morning and informed him about the Hyena. Peter said they would find the Hyena and release it outside the camp. He also said they would look for the hole where the Hyena's are coming through.
After speaking to him this morning, he said that Rangers spent the whole night looking for the Hyena and the hole. I have asked him to let me know once they have more information. I will then post it here. Thanks

Hi All. When we first visited KNP (1966) we saw hyenas in Skuks every night so this is not something new. Always sat up to see them and didn't feel threatened.

You would sometimes see more than one patrolling around the camp.

Must confess that I, in my ignorance, failed to report the matter to the camp authorities but i"m sure they were aware of the problem.

I agree with pops

This is definitley no new problem. My dad told me once of lions laying around the communal fire inside the old Rabelais camp.
In 1987 I heard a leopard being caught inside Berg-en-Dal. Saw him in the cage after he was darted by the ranger.
My uncle was in Skukuza one year (early 90's i recall) when a leopard got inside the camp. A big group of visitors cornered and terrorized the poor thing.

We are visiting their environment and should take care esp at night.

Reminds me of a trip to Skukuza a few years ago. My brother went for a shower one night and almost bumped into a hyena coming out of the ablution block! So these hyena visits have been going on for many years and these clever creatures keep on finding ways to get into the camp, to the frustration of management.

I hear the honey badgers leave one royal mess after they have done their 'dustbin duty'

Peter Dlamini, the Hospitality Services Manager at Skukuza informed me that all the hyenas were darted including the warthogs and they were removed out of the camp.

Saw the hyena (female) walking around the permantent tents on the 15th
We were enjoying our coffee when she walking past us.
And visited my friends tent and went on her way again.

did not feel treated at all.
