Hyena inside Skukuza camp last night
Woke up around 23h00 last night to find a Hyena going through the trash can outside. Was huge.
Reported it to On duty manager last night. Not sure if it was found.
Perfect sighting but dangerous I guess.

Goodness OS, what a visitor.

Myself, I would have loved it, but I hope that nothing serious has to be done to the hyena.

Hi all

This hyena has been in camp for n while now. We were camping there in June 2012 and I was sitting at the braai the morning having some coffee at about 05:30 am waiting for the gates to open and he/she sneaked up on me. It is actually a big hyena because i was sitting on a camping chair and it looked me straight in the eye.
I do not know who got the biggest freight me or the hyena and I jumped up and could only get out "my f*k hyena" and he ran off.

Over the next few days it was seen a lot at the caravans and at the ablutions late night and very early morning.

I hope they are trying to catch it.

Leander09 :) Sometimes something happens so unexpectedly - a person has to say something.

I just hope all visitors are informed of the Hyena. I do hope it is caught and relocated. A wild predator in camp is very dangerous and I'm sure children are very vulnerable to attack by a hyena who lost his fear of humans....

Let us hope a solution is found that leaves the hyena, and people unharmed
A serious thrill though!! I would love that!!

I am shocked to hear that there was a hyena INSIDE Skukuza camp last night. Many people were exposed to significant danger as a result. I hope this gets the attention it deserves. At the very least a Sanparks press release on the "how" and the "what we shall do to prevent". Or is that only likely to happen if the headlines state "Tourist severely mauled by hyena in Kruger National Park".

Wow! a hyena within the camp fence would be a great thrill  But I would have to agree with DrPhil: A hyena who has lost his fear for humans is a big risk, especially to young kids. Lets hope he gets caught soon.

No wonder to me as there were a hole in the fence in 2008 already, every year when we visited I checked the fence for repairs but till now nothing has been done. In 2008 I placed a rock in the fence where the hole were, until now no repairs have been done. Do SANParks check the fence? :hmz:

Proper maintenance of fences is essential and should be part of good management practice  . It is also my personal opinion that a visit to Kruger will always have a low risk involved as a person may encounter wild animals in camp. Apart from hyena as reported here, a person may also encounter an elephant, a leopard, a black mamba, a cobra, mosquitoes and bees for example. Those creatures are also potentially dangerous I think. It might be best to be careful and alert while visiting Kruger, although I do not think a person need to worry so much that you do not enjoy yourself.
