Been to Kruger 68 times and have seen 40 cheetah. Best was mother and 5 cubs on H3 south of Afsaal and Mother with 4 cubs near Baobab Hill in the north. Best areas in our experience are the S28/S137 around Lower Sabie and the H7 around Orpen.

Have seen well over a 100 leopards in Kruger.

In the KTP saw in 11 cheetah in one day between UriKaruus and Craig Lockhart.

Forgot to say that Cheetah Outreach has now located about 4km from my home - so I can pop over and see some "tame" cheetahs whenever I like

Hi OWN, I do not have an exact count of total seen, but to give you an idea, at the end of 2009 beginning of 2010 we saw a total of about 60 within a three month period. Obviously, they were not sixty different cheetahs, but the same ones seen on different occasions. the highlight during this period was a group of eight cheetahs seen on two different trips in December 2009. the grand total, I guess should be around 150.

I'm no expert on finding cheetahs (probably seen 15 in Kruger) but my thinking has been this ....

1) Where there are lions, hyena's , leopard, you simply won't find many cheetahs. They can' t kill and eat in peace. They lose too many meals.

2) They need open space to use their speed.

3) They will hunt in the mid day, when other predators are snoozing.

4) Generally they are semi-lazy. They will find the high ground and wait for the prey to come to them.

5) Long grass gives them superb cover, and a quick quiet kill.

They pans above Satara on the main tar road 20kms or so have always been good. Once we saw a group of 7 of them there.

2 Years ago got this kill, just above mopani ( no lions, long grass, open space, 11am ) , just past the tropic line.
