Our plan so far is to fly from UK to Capetown to Upington and then spend 8/9 nights in the park. Burning questions so far relate to cars. Any advice on what best to hire? Would a ruggedish vehicle like a Nissan XTrail (not 4wd) be good enough? Cost of hire is of course a factor in our choice. Also should we be concerned about lions and hyenas munching tyres, or anything else, either whilst on the road, or more likely over night if in an unfenced camp? Have read the tales of this happening and have to say its a bit worrying!

We plan on going late October next year so want to be ready to book accommodation on 1st November so plenty of excitement and fun over the next three weeks putting the trip together.

Any help welcomed!

I can relate to your excitement

As long as you are not staying in Bitterpan and Gharagab the 4x2 Xtrail, should be fine. Some roads can be badly corrugated but the Xtrail gives you the extra height which you will need in some areas.

We haven't had any trouble with any animals chewing our tyres as yet in all our trips. We have stayed in unfenced camps like Grootkolk and Urikaruus where we had hyenas visit at night.

October is a nice time to visit, we were there last October.

Happy planning

Thanks a lot.
So I will avoid too much people...off course
My possibility at the moment (if will be availability)
could be or in march or (I think better for my work) at the end of July /first days of August.
In this different time the game normally stay in different zones ? (side Nossob or side Mata ) ..to book more time in a side instead of the other in accordance with the time (march o july/august)
Thanks

Another question..in both time the light is so great and there is the dust ! (those are necessary for the right photos in Kalahari ?)
No too much vegetation in March with problem to see the game ?

I will only add that, in regard to your vehicle, if cost is a concern, don't feel that you MUST have a higher vehicle. IMO that's a matter of prefrence and economics. Since I travel solo, the cost of both 4x4s and 2x4s is, for me, prohibitive — I'd rather spend my funds on extra nights in the park! So I've always visited in a sedan (1992 Toyota Corolla; 2007 VW Polo; 2010 Ford Fiesta) and I've never felt that I was missing much, even with those high verges along the Nossob. I also prefer being more on eye level with lions et alia rather than looking down onto them :D

The corrugations can be uncomfortable no matter what you drive. Just be sure that you have your tyre pressure lowered when you enter the park and keep to slower speeds and you'll be fine. And enjoy those unfenced wilderness camps with ALL the possibilities they bring — they're magic! (The only time I had a problem with hyenas was when I had an already damaged wing mirror that was held on/together with tape; the hyenas chopped on that and made quite a mess  It was the first time that Avis had heard that one, we all had a good laugh, and the damage was covered by insurance 8) )

HTH, have a great trip!

Hi Jelico :D

It sounds really exciting to be planning new horizons.

I am not sure of the cost of hiring a Daihatsu Terios, but it seems to be a tough little car capable of some serious off road driving.

Morning giova and welcome to the Forum :D

The Kalahari gets in rain in our summer - ususally starting in Oct/Nov and ending sometime around April/May so if you come in March the grass is usually quite high already but it is very beautiful and green .... July/August is in the middle of the dry season so there is no tall grass and LOTS and lots of dust .... the early morning and late afternoon light is beautiful in both winter and summer - but in summer the gates are open for much longer so you can stay out in the park for longer ( March 6.30 - 7pm; July 7.30 am - 6pm ) ... Its a tough one as each time of the year is different and each trip is different .... I'd agree with the others and choose the best time to suit you - I'm sure you'll have an amazing time whenever you come ... As you know Aug can be very cold so if you can, try for a different time like March and then see which was better ....

We drive a Daihatsu Terios and it worked a treat in Kgalagadi, as long as you adjust the air in your tyres.
A 4x2 or 4x4 option is available as far as I know, but either will be fine. And you get a nice ground clearance.

Thanks again
I think Kalahari could be interesting with green grass...but ...the particular of this park (for me) is dust and light red ..and I am afraid about the right possibility to take photos because the grass sometimes give less opportunity because wildlife is inside the vegetation...or some grass hide the details of the game.
Could some photograp give me his idea about ?
Thanks
Gio

We have been to KTP in September and April. April was stunning but allot of rain meant flooded roads and definitely a 4x4. Twice we have been in September and it has been stunning - just bare in mind nights are still pretty cold but the days are wonderful. This year temps reached 45 degrees and we loved spending time in the pool. Night time was around about 5 degrees!
