KZN artist, Gill Mittins, has decided to 'go for it' . Gill donated her painting, "Rhino", inspired by Lawrence Anthony, to SANParks to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino, and to raise funds for the fight against poaching. And now, you too can do more than 'thinking'; you can 'go for it' and play a role in the fight against rhino poaching.
In honour of the rhino which have been butchered in South Africa this year, and previous years, you can donate R10 and select any available number between 1 - 1000. A donation of R100 allows for a selection of 12 numbers. At the end of October 2012, a random number between 1 - 1000 will be drawn by a SANParks official. The person who selected the number drawn by SANParks, will become the proud owner of the painting "Rhino".

Gill was born in Scotland, spent her teenage years in Gloucestershire and moved to Spain when she was 18. She has lived in South Africa since 1984. She moved from Johannesburg to Umhlanga Rocks (KZN) in 2000.
In addition to ‘accidentally’ qualifying as an English language teacher, massage therapist, recruitment consultant and Lifeline counsellor, Gill was involved in the property market for some 25 years. She can’t decide what to be when she grows up, so she’s keeping her options open!
Gill started painting in 2000 and was amazed to find that people liked her work enough to buy it! She reckons her artistic abilities are directly proportional to the amount of red wine she consumes whilst painting and she’s going to keep on practising until she gets the formula exactly right! She has raised substantial amounts of money for various charities through the sale of her paintings.
Currently, Gill works in La Lucia (Durban) as Personal Assistant to the Directors of a MPC Recruitment, a national company. She loves travelling to far-flung places, spending time in the African Bush, renovating houses and life in general. She has also written and submitted one novel and is working on her second one.
Gill has been divorced twice, describes herself as being ‘happily single’ at the moment, and hopes that George Clooney will appear on her doorstep one day soon! Her son is an accountant in the Cayman Islands, and her daughter is a former nature conservationist who now works as a freelance photojournalist for various travel and wildlife magazines.
Gill was motivated to paint “Rhino” after meeting Lawrence Anthony at a Rotary function and reading his 3 books. This painting is a tribute to his efforts to protect our wildlife throughout his life.
