Had some nice chats on the road last week, but there were also quite a few 'robot' drivers as well.....

Cellphone reception

Unread postby sandals » Mon Sep 17, 2012 1:27 pm

Please can anyone help - we are going to be in Twee Riviern, Urikerus, Nossob, Groot Kolk, Gharagap & Mata Mata - besides Twee Rivieren is there any other place with cellphone reception. We are going to be in the park for nearly 3 weeks and need to be able to make contact with our office -even once. :)

Mata-mata has some. Sometimes. Nossob might have it, but that I do not know.

From Urikaruus you can drive to Twee Rivieren, about 10 kilometers from TR you have reception. And that drive is a good one...

Just been to the Park, reception at TR is fine, didn't chack Mata Mata.
Nossob & Urikaruus, didn't have reception.
Apparently with a Namibian SIM card, you can get reception in Grootkolk

In KK the sms ssss waiting to be delivered came in at night and at the same time ours were send....
In Urikarus you do get a signal from Namibia but it s very weak (thats what our neighbours told us with a Nam phone)

Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.

Hi sandals
looking at your itinery, you will only have reception at Twee Rivieren. If you are desperate, the drive from Urikaruus is about 65km, so it is quiet do-able in two hours

The other camps are a bit too far away, so make your plans around that.

Enjoy

If your cellphone has roaming on it, you'll have a namibia signal in Gharagab........especially when on the lookout tower.

We rented a satellite phone for our visit in May, we didn't use it, but took it with just in case of emergencies, because we were going to Gharaghab, and one never knows what could happen out there. It's well worth it, to have peace of mind, and in case somebody needs to contact you from "home" We tried the signal from the look-out at Gharaghab, sent some sms's but they were never delivered. Couldn't phone, the signal was too weak.

Mercifully only 2R has reliable cellphone reception sandals, so you will have to ride down there a few times to connect.

Should not be too onerous as the area is cooking at the moment.

Hi Sandals

Good reception at Tweerivieren. A little bit at Kieliekrankie - OK for SMS but not too good for conversation. At Grootkolk there is a tiny bit of reception (literally 1 sq m) near the entrance to the camp. Gharagab fantastic reception via Namibia if you have international roaming - I even got e-mails on my Blackberry there!! Good luck - have a fantastic trip!!
