The newest member of Karoo National Park. The Brown Hyena was released about 3 weeks ago into the park.

There was 4 individuals introduced of which one male and female is a breeding pair. So they will be allowed to breed.

That is just wonderful news!!!

I actually thought they were already present in the park but I probably confused with Mountain Zebra NP!

I must say the Frontier Parks section is an extremely intresting part of this forum. Since I became a member I closely followed the re-introduction of Lion and Hyeana in Addo, Cheetah in Mountain Zebra and Lion and Brown Hyena in Karoo.

And than I didn't even mention the extension of Addo and the great project of linking Mounatin Zebra with Cambeboo...Extremely energetic people managing these parks methinks! And people who, in the long end will help enormously to uplift the welfare of the whole region, I'm pretty sure of that

And who knows what will follow?

Hyena Trap

Measures used by early stock farmers to combat stock losses, was the use of these hyena traps, also known as the 'Wolvehok' (Wolf coop). These are primitive stone structures, about 2 to 2.5 metres in size. At the rear of the trap, bait was secured to a pin, to lure the hyena, jackal or leopard in. When the animal tugged on the bait, a trap door would be released, and trap the animal in. A small opening on the top of the trap structure, small enough for someone to see in and for a spear or rifle to be pushed in, is usually covered by a stone. The trapped animal was then shot or speared to death through this small opening. These traps contributed to the extinction, in the Karoo, of the brown hyena.

Some of the traps are now a Cultural heritage site within the park and people can see them up close next to the rest camp and on the Potlekkertjie loop.
