Brita won't work, we tried it and it made no difference to the taste of the water. Rather "lug" all your water along, you won't be sorry. It is just not possible to make coffee, tea and cooldrinks with the tap water, it tastes like sea water gone wrong
If you're camping buy an aluminium kettle, they're inexpensive, otherwise kettles are supplied.

Shopping in Upington

Unread postby arks » Mon Sep 10, 2012 4:05 pm

In the past, en route to KTP, I've bought my meat at Skaapland, which I understand is no more? Is there another recommended butcher in Upington? And does the Woolworths have a food hall as well, or must I stick to PnP? (Not that I have any problems with PnP, I've shopped there happily in the past, but Woolies does have some nice things that I can't get elsewhere — I'm addicted to their soft rye bread  )

Hi Arks,

Wollies is only clothing............so it will have to be PNP.

You can ask PNP butchers to vacuum pack your meat and pre-freeze if you want to email them. I can PM you some of the butchers numbers if you want.

Pick n Pay were very helpful last year when we went to KTP.
They vacuum packed all our meat and I had emailed before so all our groceries were waiting!!

Jannie (KGuru) offered to PM me the butcher that they use, so you could ask him, but our P n P meat was perfectly OK.

Yes, don't think you will get 24 hr service though.

There is also a Fruit&Veg City.
Don't know about their meat but fruit, veg and bakery were pretty good.
Also a liquor shop next door.
Big bags of ice at a good price.

Only hassle was very busy on a Friday early afternoon in Feb this year.

You can get fuel at both the service station and the co-op.
Never had a problem with supply both petrol and diesel.
Have always stopped there during normal trading times so do not know if 24hrs service.

Rule #1 when you hit "the outback": tank if you can!
So fill up even if your tank is 60% full. The next station may be out of power or petrol. In both cases you'll get nothing.

But this is not really the outback, though I have heard of Twee Rivieren not having petrol in the past due to either of those two reasons. But that is from years back. Then again, even KNP has its troubles sometimes.
I would play it safe and tank before Ashkam as well..

Hi Judik,

You email them what meat you want and how many per packet.....they vacuum pack and freeze these for you. When you get to the store you go to the butchery and ask for your meat and pay for if with the other groceries. Or you could arrange for credit card payment before and then just pick up your meat.

I'll send the email address to you now now!!!... :D
