Living in the Cape we are so used to these birds that one sometimes don’t even bother to look at them anymore. Thanks for reminding us of them again.

I suddenly decided to post these pix, taken 11th November of last year in the Cape Town harbour. Just because it´s that one time where I am actually so close to a bird that I can take a nice photo with my horrible excuse for a camera

Oh, and funnily enough it was a tick for me - since I only had been birding in Mapungubwe, Kruger, Botswana and Zim! I know it´s a very common bird though.

Common though they may be, I love these dainty gulls especially compared to the ubiquitous herring gulls we get here in Cornwall.

Hi

Just returned from PE and wonder if this is a juvenille Grey-headed Gull.

Also heard a Burchell's Coucal and eventually found it high up in a palm tree. (it rained later that day and I never saw it again!)

Thanks

Could be but more likely imm. Hartlaub's. The ear coverts are quite light.

As is the row of brownish covert feathers on the wing, the dark eye and the pure white tail

Thanks Maxwell and Johan, that was my other option, but the map in my Sasol book doesn't make it clear that it is also found in PE which is why I asked.

Loving learning about birdies so thanks for all the input. :gflower:

Did you also notice the turned in toes on the feet?

I saw these terns (at least I'm pretty sure that they ARE terns  ) swimming in a puddle just off the beach in Langebaan on a very rainy day in June. Looking at the pix now, I'm wondering not only which sort they are — my best guess is nonbreeding (and possibly immature?) common tern — but even if they might perhaps be two different sorts. :hmz: I saw them on 7 June 2012.

Try looking at gulls, arks. I'm sure you'll get the ID... Both are the same species

Hey KobusF,

Looks like you got a Hartlaub's gull.
