A special and visually spectacular "object" hides next to the Southern cross. It is visible with binoculas, and carries a name which will impress the ladies. What is this called?

Well, since no-one is even attempting anything here, I guess I'll have to answer. The Jewel Box.

We often use the sun for navigation and assume it to be fully accurate. Does the sun always rise due east and set due west? Explain your answer.

You're correct that it doesn't, IB. However, the main reason is the tilt of the earth's axis as it travels about the sun, meaning that the sun appears to oscillate between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer over the course of one year. This in turn affects the point of setting of the sun on the horizon, meaning that the sun only rises due east and sets due west on two dates during the year - the equinoxes.
