Charbel,

Did you explore the 360 Cities photo under photos on Google earth. Its a red square allowing you to zoom into the camp and get a 360 degree view. There are a few other 360 cam view taken acros KTP, e.g. Melkvlei picnic site and Nossob camp. you will get a good idea of the camp set-up through these views.

Also check out facebook for video clips by Jan Kriel and photos of other members.

If you are worried about the 4x4 section you can always arrange with Grootkolk camp attendant to radio to Gharagab at your expected arrival time. Even Nossob will make contact with Gharagab to make sure that you have arrive safely. I did the trip to Grootkolk on my own and Nossob phoned through to make sure I've arrived safely. You will find lots of help when you in the park and the personnel will make sure you are safe at the end of the day. If not a search party will be send out, but I am sure the road will not be that difficult and you will make it easy.

We have done the Nossob 4x4 route where you will find a few tricky dunes. But by reversing and try again a bit faster one usually makes the dune. I have only experience of driving to Bitterpan, which had one difficult dune, but most not to difficult.

Somewhere on the forum you will find videos of these two road and maybe some-one did post something on Gharagab.

About Gharagab, let me ask you. We are not experience 4 x 4 trail drivers. Did we make a mistake in reserving Gharagab (because we can simply get stuck in the way there) and would better change our reservations?

Gharagab is a so peaceful and so beautiful place. Be sure you've made a very good choice !
I have been there this July. The track to drive there is not so difficult. As Hippotragus I did not used low ratio and I am a 4x4 beginner too.
Just : drive slowly slowly (to see landscape and to drive safetly) , with deflated tyres (1,3 for me). When you don't have speed enough : reverse and try again.
Just be careful (don't speed) when you go the dunes down : some quite tight corners.
May be some more experienced driver will have some better advice for you
The landscapes .... GREAT !
I hope you'll have a great time there in red sand dunes it is a so nice place !
... and hope this helps and despite my bad english language (sorry, i am french  )

Dear Yvo,
Thanks. It was very useful. Already glad to have chosen Gharagab!

Cheers

Just FYI that website belongs to one of our forumites, madach (Arnoud Quanjer) and yes, it's superb! And don't worry, charbel, KTP is very easy to negotiate, you'll be fine.

Have a great trip!

Dear friends,
Here I am again with questions for planning the trip to Kgalagadi.

In the Go! site, I've read an article on game sighting around Twee Rivieren: http://www.gomag.co.za/destinations/story/171

They say:
"Try to spot the meerkat colony in the riverbed to the right, about 100 m before the turn-off to the first lookout point just north of Houmoed."

But examining google maps, the description confuses me. I see no lookout point north of Houmoed but rather the entry a turn to the right in the main road that leads to a bifurcation, to the left leading to the lookout point to the waterhole: http://www.wildlifephotography.nl/maps/ktp

Could someone tell me, first, if this meerkat colony is still seen around there, and, second, specify a bit more the location?

All the best
Charbel

Hi there charbel,

To answer your question regarding the Meerkat colony, it must be remembered that Meerkat’s do not stay in the same area for very long neither will they utilize the den site for long periods of time. The reason being that these dens become flea invested etc and the Meerkat’s would leave the den site to one of their other sites within their territory. It would be very difficult to say how long they will stay in one place and if they will still be there.

Currently there is a colony about 300m outside Twee Rivieren camp in the riverbed.

Hope the above would help.

KG

Dear Kgalagadi Guru
It does help. Maybe the best thing is to look in the camps sighting boards to see where people saw them some time before...
Are they too hard to see when travelling around?

Cheers
Charbel

Charbel,

Indeed the sightings board would be the best indicator on where they have been seen, otherwise when you are in camp you are welcome to come and say hi then if i heard of any sightings I would gladly share it with you.

The best time to spot them are when they emerge from their holes to catch the early morning sun trying to heat up, then late in the afternoon before the sun sets is also a good time.

Dear Kgalagadi Guru,
I will certainly look for you when I arrive in Twee Rivieren. Forumites already told me that we can ask for you in the old reception.

I'd like also to ask if there are sighting boards on the wilderness camps, or only in the main camps.

Also, are waterholes indicated by signs in the road as in KNP?

Cheers
Charbel

Sightings boards are only at the main camps and at Kalahari Tented Camp.............

All waterholes has a build name sign right next to the waterhole.

Dear Lion Queen
Thanks for the information.

One more question, my friends. Planning the trip with Google Maps I found between Kamfersboom e Auchterlonie an indication of Frans Roussow's ashes. I googled it and found nothing (maybe first time this happened to me. Google is not God, after all! :o)

Could someone tell me something about it?

Cheers
Charbel

In connection to the ashes of Frans Rossouw.

I don't have any facts and this is just what could be possible.......maybe it was Frans' wish that his ash mush be strewn in the Kgalagadi after his death.

Maybe there is some one with facts???
