Day 11




We came across some nauty monkeys at the N’wamanzi lookout point near Olifants. We were admiring the view while Philip got some snacks from our boot. Suddenly I heard him yell. He had a bag of sugar puffs in his hands, when a monkey appeared from nowhere and grabbed the bag. Philip wasn’t giving up and the monkey held tight, hanging with his whole bodyweight. Neither of them giving in. But then the monkey got aggressive and showed his teeth and Philip lost…

He took off with the bag and jumped into a tree hanging over the cliff. I ran after it, but there was no way I could get to him. The whole group appeared and started fighting for the sugar puffs. The bag tore and you saw, not only sugar puffs flying all over the place but monkeys running after them.




We were about to drive off when Roan saw the empty bag. The wind blew it back. He went to fetch it. What a good boy.

Today I'm sharing some of our bird pictures. We are not experts on birds, but my interest is growing and I seem to look for them more often now.

We are leaving for South Africa today. My sister PetraJ is so kind and said she will post my last 7 installments for you guys till we arrive at Kruger. I will try to pop in while in South Africa. See you all in 3 weeks time.

So in a weeks time, we will be sitting on a bench like this one....



And look for great stuff at a viewpoint like this one....



And I hope to end our days with a sunset like this one.....

We found this little baby giraffe all by herself one morning. We looked for other giraffes but couldn’t find any. Hope she survived.

Hi from a COLD South Africa

We are having a splendid time here in south africa. We brought the cold and snow from the Netherlands to SA. We are at Dikhololo wildlife resort at the moment and it SNOWED yesterday. The first snow they ever had. And with temperatures of -2 last night, we, my sister (geocor) and family enjoyed a warm movies day INSIDE yesterday

We did a little game drive yesterday afternoon (in the snow...a first time experience for everyone) and saw giraffes, zebra, elands, and lots more. So we saw our first game and the kids loved it.

Heading for Nelspuit on Friday and then kruger

The floods this year made me very sad. Our visit in March, we still saw some damage that the floods caused. The bridge to Balule looked like this


This pic was taken at Biyamiti. Roan and I enjoyed sitting on the bench, looking for some wildlife.


Even in the winter, my kids enjoy swimming. Here they are trying out the pool at Shimuwini.

Hi Everyone

We just arrived home from a wonderful 3 week holiday. Happy to be back home and already planning our next trip. We had wonderful weather and sightings. I will sort out our luggage first and then start sorting out our thousands of photos. I will continue with our first day of Kruger tomorrow.

Thanks for following my TR. It's good to be back, we are exhausted but satisfied. We had a wonderful holiday. Thanks for posting my last few days PetraJ.

I am sorting out the pics, and uploaded my first video's. So get your popcorn ready, the fist installment will follow shortly.

Day 1 Pretoriuskop

So the time finally arrived for us to go to Kruger. Our first destination was Pretoriuskop so we decided to enter our Kruger 2012 adventure through Phabeni gate. After we did our last minute shopping at Nelspruit, we reached Kruger at 11:00.

Check in went smoothly. We were welcomed by very friendly staff as usual. It was hot and what we loved mostly, was the clear blue skies and sunshine. We missed that, as it's raining and clouded most of the time in the Netherlands.

The kids got their binoculars and cameras ready, we drove slowly through the gates and all eyes were on the bushes. What will we see first? Impala's of course. And they were so tame. You could almost touch them while passing by.

We took the S3 down to Pretoriuskop and saw some buffalo's, zebra's, kudu's and a beautiful brown snake eagle. We arrived 1,5 ours too early for check in, so we decided to walk around camp and enjoy the bird life.



We are not very good at bird names, so I hope that the identification of these birds is correct. Please tell me when I'm wrong. The first bird we saw was this little scarlet-chested sunbird.



We saw these brown-headed parrots as well. They were all over camp. Never seen so many parrots in one place.



We went to check if there is water at the swimming pool and were pleasantly surprised to see lots of monkeys playing there. We sat on a bench and enjoyed them for more than an hour. They were so entertaining.



There were only 2 baboons. A mom, minding her own business and a little one. He looked a bit bored and decided to play with the monkeys. We were amazed to see how some of the monkeys tolerated him. One even played with him. After a while the monkeys started to get irritated, but he just kept on going. It was so entertaining to watch.
A great welcome to Kruger.

We got the key to our hut, number 48. A huge 6 bed hut, close to the bathrooms and almost next to the fence.





We had to be ready for our first sunset drive and at 16:30 so we decided to make some hamburgers before we left. Our first meal in Kruger was delicious with real boerewors hamburger patties. I will tell you more about our night drive in my next installment.
