I have often wondered what stops crocs that live in Kruger rivers from getting out of the park by swimming upstream. After all there is no underwater sign telling them that they are leaving Kruger.

Anyone know?

They do most certainly "get out" (or maybe they were never "in" to start off with). I have a timeshare unit at Hazyview, and there are couple of crocs that live in the river right in front of our unit. Makes for an intersting late afternoon stroll on the river banks... :o

I do not know for sure Bush Baptist but I think they are present in the rivers in the surrounding towns (to Kruger) in the Lowveld. I recall a tragedy which took place a few years back, I think at Phalaborwa, town, on New Years or Christmas day involving a crocodile.

You are quite right Grantmissy, it was 1 January 2010 in the Phalaborwa area. We know the husband of the deceased.

There are plenty of Crocs outside the western part of the park. Swim there at your own peril!
Take the Limpopo for example...you find the crocs a few hundred km west of the park.
And its not just a croc thing.
I rmember in 2005 when a guy was killed by a lion outside the Phalaborwa Spar at night. Also someone was driving on the tar road to Letaba and saw a lion dragging a man across the road.

They can be found in most low lying sections of major rivers, and were spotted in the Duzi river just before the race started. They have an amazing way of adapting to any condition and that is why they have survived the big dinosaur extinction. Jackals and vervet monkeys are in the same league when it come to surviving in populated areas.

And then there was that photo on facebook of an elephant at a mine in Phalaborwa!

Thanks all.

I was just wondering how far one has to go from a national/Natal park to be able to swim in a river in the country to be able to do it without worrying about being eaten.

BB, when I was a small child, we used to visit my grandparents in Schoemanskloof. We were not allowed to go near the river alone, as there were a lot of crocs. That is 100km? up river... :hmz:

I think see that tongue in BBs cheek again, and we all fell for it!!!

............however I'm a bit concerned as all the tales of sightings outside the park seem to involve Phalaborwa (where we're staying for 4 months later this year!!)

There is a small resort just outside of Brits called Drie Berge. We go there quite often over weekends and they have a few crocs in the river, with ampel warnings signs around.

Yes, and Dungy used to fish at Mapelane back in the late 70s and he often had encounters with crocs hippos and sharks..................I often felt if one didn't get him, the others would!!
