Lowveld cluster-leaf / Sterkbos (Terminalia prunioides)

Unread postby arks » Mon Jul 24, 2006 2:04 am

I've got probably as many "mystery" plants as I have mystery birds, so I'm hoping someone (JB?) can help me with ID of at least some of them.

This shrub I saw along the H14

Arks

Your tree is the Lowveld cluster-leaf (Sterkbos)(Terminalia prunioides).

It is a common tree in the lowveld as well as the northern parts of SA. It is a beautiful tree for gardening, as those purple pods are quite stunning.

The Afrikaans name "sterkbos" which can be translated as "strong bush", relates to the strength of its wood. The wood is used for making implement handles.

It is also browsed by game.

Thanks, Imberbe. It is a lovely shrub/tree and I love those purple pods :D

I think this red/purple pod tree is, however, different?
