After fertilising a female, male grasshoppers remain on top of her back for up to several days, without eating. Why do they do this?

To prevent another male from fertilising her. A male has the ability to remove the sperm of another male from the female. Staying in place after mating prevents another male from doing this.

Is it because the external characteristics of males and females are virtually identical, such that the sex cannot be visually distinguished in most species?

Processionary caterpillars spin large bags of silk, wherein they pupate. The amount of silk that could be harvested from such bags could benefit humans, but unfortunately this silk cannot be used commercially. Why not?
