Here in South Oz our state govt. banned single use plastic shopping bags of all descriptions, a couple of years ago. Now a lot of women (well it is mainly women sorry guys) carry a material type bag make of nylon or something, which can scrunch/fold up to about half the size of a spectacles case, in their handbag.
When we were shopping in the Spar near the Phalaborwa gate last year, the checkout lady commented on my bags (which we brought from home) and thought they were great.
So.....are these regularly used in South Africa or freely available in the supermarkets?

They are freely available and some very light bags have an aluminium lining on the inside, which offers some insulation.

Unfortunately the plastic bags still can be bought for a few cents when at the checkout and again they make for polution .. We do use the ordinary bags BUT we use them over and over and over and when they start showing wear and tear they are recycled. Places like Makro do not supply bags and somehow no one complains.

The Spar at Phalaborwa is our supermarket of choice when we are in residence there!!
Such friendly and helpful staff.
Last time we were there Sept - Nov, they were still selling the old plastic bags, but like Hugh, we also use them over and over, and then recycle!!
However I will look for the sort of thing 3D is describing.

Hi Val! I completely agree that the staff at Spar Phalaborwa are really friendly! I had a great conversation with the check out lady each time I went in! And when we were there Aug/Sept. last year, there was a pancake fundraiser or something one day and a book stall in the car park another day. It was great!
There was quite a bit of whinging about the banning of plastic bags here  but a short while after it was implemented no one was fussed at all! Now I just need to carry one of the bags I mentioned all the time - I tend to remember them for supermarket shopping but forget if I go to a department store. It is a bit awkward if you forget your bag and you just bought a whole lot of new underwear
