Addo to Eden

Unread postby megeegee » Fri Nov 12, 2010 7:25 am

Can anyone tell me more about this project?
I only know that is the intention to create a conservation corridor from Addo to Wilderness / Knysna / Garden route through interaction with land owners along the planned route?
It sounds FANTASTIC! Big up to conservation SA if what I have heard is true.....

Hi megeegee,

You are indeed correct that there is an organisation with this focus, but it is a private organisation not related to Sanparks. It is actually referred to Eden to Addo. My girlfriend recently took part in the Eden to Addo hike, a total distance of 400km over 18 days - I AM SO PROUD OF HER!!!

It started in the Harkerville area (between Plett and Knysna) crossed 5 mountain ranges in the process and ended at the foothills of the Zuurberg in Addo. It is a "lazy" hike, meaning that you only carry day packs. Your main bags are transported in 4x4's and the logistics team does everything, from setting up camp, digging toilets, to cooking for you.

This hike is an annual event and is used to raise funds and awareness for this proposed corridor. I did not take part, but judging by the stories and the photos, it is an incredible experience and well worth it. Im sure if you google "Eden to Addo" you will find more information.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Pat

Hello Patto,

Thanks for the information, sounds like a great hike. If I wasn't so unfit and lazy, I would consider taking time off work and doing it myself!

Hi megeegee :D

I am an environmental science honours student at Rhodes University and one of the masters students in my department is working on the Addo to Eden project. She actually recently gave a presentation on her research at our annual departmental forum - which is like a two day conference where we all present our research results or progress - and it is an incredible project. She is in charge of finding the most appropriate "route" in terms of the social, economic and ecological factors involved in creating the corridor. The whole project is going very well and has gained much support from the land owners who will be involved in the project. It is very exciting! I will ask her for some info to post when I get a chance - exams are going on at the moment so it may take a while!! But I'll do my best

Eden to Addo corridor

Unread postby Salva » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:25 pm

Another long term project that looks very promising and that would make all nature lovers go wild when it would come through.

I wonder how committed SANP is to make this one work. Are you actually at all involved?

Anyhow loads of exciting things going on in and around the frontier parks me thinks.

Hi Salva,
The Eden to Addo initiative is a private initiative to promote a conservation corridor between the Garden Route and Addo. SANParks supports the concept of conservation corridors in terms of supporting the promotion of conservation practices and ecologically-sustainable land-use practices.
In terms of this particular initiative, we allow the hikers access to SANParks land and provide logistical support on our land if needed.
The initiative raises awareness about conservation. SANParks does not plan to buy up all the land between the Garden Route and Addo as this would be logistically and financially impossible.
